Floppy Disk with Appleworks file?

Hello, I seem to have a bit of a problem on my hands... I have a floppy disk from an older, Classic-running computer with an appleworks document on it, and I'm currently working from a Macbook.
The guy at my apple store told me I had to get a USB floppy drive (which I got) and to try either finding a really old computer that was running something before OSX, or to try downloading sheepshaver on my current computer. Because, of ourse, the usb floppy drive won't connect to a system running OSX.
I found an old iMac that was running OS 9 and tried it on that, but it told me I had to "initialize the disk" when I put the floppy drive in. This is the only copy I have of this document, and didn't know what that meant, so I just took it out instead. Does anyone know what this means? Will it open my document after that, or will it delete it?

I also have been trying to use sheepshaver on my macbook, to see if I could run 9 and use it from that, but the instructions are all hideously complicated and all from like 5 years ago...
Anyone have any advice for me? I'm happy to try anything, but apparently I'm not savvy enough to work through the sheepshaver how to's...
Thanks so much!

Because, of course, the usb floppy drive won't connect to a system running OSX.

USB floppy drives work fine with Mac OS X.

What they don't work fine with is 800K diskettes, which are supported ONLY on beige Macs with a built-in floppy drive. No third party or PC drives ever chose to support the variable-speed motor required for 800K format.

800K diskettes are recorded on 2D or 2DD media, which has only a write protect tab.

1.4MB Diskettes that can be read/written in a USB drive are recorded on HD diskettes that have an additional hole opposite the write protect hole.

"initialize the disk"

This will erase all files on the disk, in a way that is unrecoverable.

Hi, chocolateparadox -

There's some resources listed in a thread from just the other day:
