Dear Eric,

You can change your iTunes Store billing information at any time. When you update your credit card number or billing address through the iTunes Store, any equivalent information you might use with MobileMe, iPhoto, Aperture, or the Apple Store online is also updated.

To update your billing address or credit card number, follow these steps:

1) Make sure you're using the latest version of iTunes. It can be downloaded free of charge from the Apple website:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download

Eric, installing the latest version of iTunes will not affect your library or any items in your account that you haven't downloaded.

2) Click this link: http://phobos.apple.com/accountSummary

iTunes will automatically launch and the sign-in dialog will appear.

3) If you are not already signed in, you will need to enter your iTunes Store account name and password and then click the Account Info button.

4) On your Apple Account Information page, click Edit Payment Information

Make the necessary changes. Your billing address should be exactly the same as the address on your credit card statement and with the United States Postal Service (click "Find a ZIP Code" at http://www.usps.com and follow the onscreen instructions). This is important, because even differences in punctuation, abbreviation, and capitalization can cause payment errors that might prevent you from using the iTunes Store.

5) When all of the information is up to date, click Done.

When you update your billing information, the iTunes Store places an authorization hold on your credit card to verify your account information. You might see this authorization request on your online statement. This is not an actual charge; it is simply a test to confirm that your credit card account is active and has credit available to accommodate transactions.

Authorization requests are automatically removed from your account by your financial institution. The amount of time it takes to remove authorization requests varies by financial institution. If you have any questions about the way your financial institution handles authorization requests, please contact their customer-service department.

Thank you for your time. If you have any other questions or concerns, regarding your iTunes Store account, Eric, please feel free to reply to this email. Have a great day.

Sincerely,

Timothy

My reply

I've read the support pages through and through and have gone through all of these steps in the past. Nothing on my end has changed. This card has been used for approx three years now, never to have been edited. As stated... In the midst of all of this difficulty, you were able to bill the same card for my mobile me subscription. Which should technically not gone through due to the supposed billing info not matching my bank's records! So quite simply, my card does work, this is something on your end, not my bank.

And I did however change the type case to match my statement to no avail. This never made a difference in the past, but I tried it regardless.

After attempting things for two months, I am growing tired of trying to spend my money on Apple. I will try one more suggestion if one is available. After that, I have had great success with the amazon store and may have to flip over to them. My time is way too valuable to be troubleshooting a problem I did not create.

any specific help would be appreciated (please do not copy and paste tips from the support pages... been there)

Eric

After all the posting and anguish I called the credit card/bank 4+ times trying to get this resolved. It was accepting my credit card information and then, like you, I discovered iTunes would wipe it again. (this was just last night)

Call your credit card/bank and ask them to "refresh" your card. Ask them if there are any holds or restrictions on your account paying to iTunes. I know, I know this sounds like everything you have done before but it actually works. Once the telephone banker "refreshed" my card it was accepted in iTunes and I have made several purchases with it- the information is still there 24 hours later and all seems to be back to normal.

Turns out my problem was a combination of iTunes being buggy and ultimate my bank locking out iTunes from access and charging my account. I suspect if you have the same issue then hopefully you can call and get your card "refreshed". Negative synergy to say the least.

I sincerely hope this works for you. I have had the WORST time with both my bank and the worthless iTunes form letter of how to re-install iTunes over and over again.

Good luck.

And did you have to reenter your information on the website or through iTunes before you could purchase after the refresh? And the refresh worked right away - you didn't have to wait til some goofy time for the changes to propagate through their system or something? Thank you so much for your help! So sorry you had to go through all this, though.

Ugh, still no dice. I just went ahead and used my paypal account...hope that doesn't cause more bank fees to hit.

I could never find a place to use paypal until i tried to buy a gift card through iTunes...then I was able to set up my paypal account, then canceled the gift card and went and bought songs.

Thanks for your help and, again, sorry you had to go through all this.

I have been on the phone for 6hours today with the same problem and no solution yet. I have an email in to support and expect to get the same unsatisfactory results. I am going to keep reading though to see if anything helps. I've had the card refreshed by the bank, redid the address on the iPad, iTunes on my laptop, on the apple site and everywhere else I was instructed to do so. I am about at my wit's end with this!

Yes, that was one of the options that the Apple Tech had me try and it never worked. We did it twice. It took calling the bank numerous times and having them "refresh" my card information on my debit card. Once that happened everything began to work again. I dealt with this nightmarish, time wasting problem (relatively, right?) for over a week myself before everything began to work again.

I suggest calling the bank and asking for a "refresh" on your card and make sure it has no holds on it- or payment to apple.

If you've done all this (which it looks like you have) then I would give it some time. I know this does not help but I think there has to be something in the system that after a number of attempts to run your card number it locks you out. This is, of course, speculation but I can't think of another reason why a perfectly good card would not work. Apple blames it on the bank and the bank blames it on Apple. Very frustrating.

They refreshed twice today. The weirdest thing is that I was able to make a purchase from my Nook Color account on Barnes and Noble. I did that in the midst of all of this today. Another odd thing is that all the purchas attempts that were generated throughout all of this today have shown up on my bank account with $0.00 as the transaction amount. At least I can still get the free apps and free updates on my alreadybpurchased apps. I just won't be buying anything. Maybe I'll get an iTunes card but i've seen a lot of posts about problems with them too.
