Growl - What is it and do I need to update it?

New Mac user here - sorry. But I just got this onscreen message saying that a new version of Growl was available. So what is this? And do I need to update it? Is this a Mac software or something provided by Apple? My computer is "perfect" and I don't want to install anything that messes it up! I went to their website, but it didn't give me much.

I haven't installed anything in the past few weeks and suddenly just a minute ago I got the very same notice that a Growl update was available. I have never seen nor heard of it until just now, and I use this computer frequently. A search took me here, but I never installed Drop Box or anything else recently for that matter. No idea how this silent creeper just popped up like that, but it was easy to get rid of by just choosing uninstall in the updater. Strange though.

Sometimes Growl is bundled with other applications (e.g. Adium).
