Unlimited plan on iPad 3G

I ordered my iPad on May 24, and received it today, June 7. It did indeed offer me the option to choose the $29.99 unlimited plan, which I promptly did!

Evidently, the info posted on the Apple Store site about ORDERING before June 6 was a fact. I was afraid that I would have had to ACTIVATE the iPad prior to June 6 for the unlimited plan to be available.

Just my personal experience, and I hope this answers some concerns that some have had about the availability of the unlimited plan.

For what it's worth, I also called the 866-405-5125. I called at 11:35am PST, and I was on hold for 91 minutes. During the hold time, I (as others have recommended) signed up for the 2GB $25 plan and started a new cellular account.

Once sign up was complete, my account screen indicated a new "Cellular Data Number." I copied down my IMEI #, and my ICCID number, and my new Cellular Data Number.

When the rep finally answered, I she immediately asked if I was calling to activate the iPad Unlimited Plan. The process went quickly since when she asked for my Cellular Data Number, all other numbers came up on her screen.

After about 4 or 5 minutes, she asked me to power down my iPad, then restart it. When I went to "Settings" then "Cellular Data" then "View Account" I was happy to see my plan said right there on the screen "Unlimited Data Plan."

Yippie! I asked her how the day was going, and she threw out "60,000" calls made day at her center.

Hope this eases your mind, the process does work, but it is dog slow on hold for over an hour and a half.

Good luck folks.

I finally spoke to an ATT rep this morning after trying for literally three days. SHe canceled the 2g plan I signed up for last night and signed me up for the unlimited plan. I've received email confirmation saying I now have the unlimited plan and all that good stuff. The ipad account, however, after 8 hrs still says "You have no data plan. ?? I thought the switch happened immediately - is there a wait time then?

There does seem to be a wait while the account is "provisioned".
I received my iPad June 23rd, ordered it June 5th. After reading this discussion went into a brick & mortar AT&T store. First clerk was a jerk, said I could not get the unlimited plan. His boss was great. She called support, got through in 3 minutes, they transferred me to iPad support. Ironically, the AT&T store has no wifi, so the iPad support person called ME back at home after 20 minutes! I set up my account, had to "purchase" the 2gig plan, which he canceled, got the unlimited confirmation email, and am waiting for the account to be provisioned. My Cellular Data now shows "no data plan" but under Full Account Info - Unlimited Pending.
So I wait...

Right now they are just switching the users who called in and said they ordered before June 7th without true verification so anyone could call in and say that. I had it switched about an hour ago. She told me that once everything is verified with Apple the iPads that verify purchased by June 7th will stay on the Unlimited Plan and the ones that don't check-out will go to the 2GB Data Plan.

Update:
Following the instructions of others posted here I called AT&T at 1-866-640-5125 on Tuesday 22 June 2010 and requested the unlimited plan. The rep had me sign up for the 2GB plan and said I would be switched in 7-10 days.

Today at 5:30am PDT I called the same number 1-866-640-5125 and the rep asked for my cellular (ipad) number. She first said the unlimited plan was unavailable, but I POLITELY insisted and explained about the grandfather option. *She then IMMEDIATELY upgraded me to the unlimited plan!!!* She did say that AT&T would verify my original purchase order with Apple and downgrade me if I did not meet the deadline of 6 JUN.

And she did warn that this plan is tied uniquely to this specific iPad. If I lost it or broke it, I would NOT be eligible for the unlimited plan again. (nuts)

So be polite, and call today and they will now upgrade you to the unlimited plan immediately!

I guess the key is to already have a 2GB plan established as you have to give them the cellular phone number associated with that plan.

p.s. hmm wonder how much one of these unlimited plan iPads will fetch on ebay. (more than its weight in gold?)

Again: the number that I called is 1-866-640-5125

I'd call the 866-640-5125 number and have them open a trouble ticket. For some of us - two of their systems aren't communicating the information. I'm PO'd that the estimated time to resolve the problem is July 1st!

I have email messages confirming that I have the unlimited plan, however my device says I don't have a data plan.

Ordered my iPad on June 6th, received it yesterday. After reading this discussion, I called this morning and signed up for unlimited service. I was on hold for less than 2 minutes. Here's what I did:

On the iPad I signed up for a data plan.
Called 866-640-5125 and entered the phone number associated with my data account.
Selected the option to speak to a customer service representative.

Like I said, I was only on hold for a couple of minutes. They were able to cancel the data plan I signed up for and added the unlimited plan.

I want to thank all the people who have been persistent in their efforts and got AT&T up to speed on this issue. I know if I had received my iPad last week and had to go through this it wouldn't have been so easy.

Called AT&T today using the given number and waited less than a minute for the rep to pick up. I called at 7pm eastern time. She asked me my IMEI and let me know that apple and AT&T will be looking into the purchases to confirm people bought the phone before June 7th. She added the unlimited data plan no questions asked. Was on the phone for less than 5 minutes with everything working properly. Received a message on my phone saying my data plan had been changed as well as received an email stating that as well. She also made sure the cellular connection was working before we got off the phone. This is the faste and best experience I've had with AT&T. I was quite impressed by it considering others having to be on hold for long periods of time.

I just got my new 3G iPad a couple of days ago. I ordered it on June 2. I was told I'd be allowed to activate the unlimited data plan if I purchased my iPad before June 7, yet the option is not available to me on my iPad. Can someone tell me who I call or what I do to activate this unlimited plan? Sorry if this has been covered, but I was hoping one of you nice folks would have a number or email address I could use to get through. Thanks.

I too now have email confirming my unlimited plan is pending. It has now been 36 hours and my data plan is not activated. I am guessing they are confirming my purchase of June 5th. In the meantime, no cellular plan. I am going to continue to monitor the iPad, and will call customer service if the first 30 days doesn't match when they finally provide the service.

end of day 2 and still waiting...
