Unlimited plan on iPad 3G

I ordered my iPad on May 24, and received it today, June 7. It did indeed offer me the option to choose the $29.99 unlimited plan, which I promptly did!

Evidently, the info posted on the Apple Store site about ORDERING before June 6 was a fact. I was afraid that I would have had to ACTIVATE the iPad prior to June 6 for the unlimited plan to be available.

Just my personal experience, and I hope this answers some concerns that some have had about the availability of the unlimited plan.

I just received this from Apple.
_______________

Thank you for purchasing iPad Wi-Fi + 3G.

Our records indicate you ordered iPad on or before June 6th, which qualifies you for AT&T's unlimited monthly plan for 3G data.

Because the unlimited monthly plan is not currently available from the on-device activation flow, Apple and AT&T have developed a special process so you can still sign-up for the unlimited plan. If you would like to request the unlimited plan, please do the following:

1. If you have not done so, please connect your iPad Wi-Fi + 3G to iTunes and activate your device.
2. You then need to activate the $25 2GB AT&T 3G DataPro Plan for iPad via Settings > Cellular Data. This is required for AT&T to be able to add the unlimited option to your account.
3. After you have activated the $25 2GB AT&T 3G DataPro Plan for iPad, call AT&T Customer Service at 1-800-331-0500 and an AT&T Customer Service Representative will assist you in activating the Unlimited AT&T 3G Data Plan for iPad.

As part of this process, AT&T and Apple will verify if you are eligible to take advantage of this offer. If you are determined to be ineligible, AT&T reserves the right to either cancel your data service for iPad or move you to a lower priced option. You will be able to activate service again or change your plan to any currently available AT&T 3G Data Plan for iPad at any time.

Please note: If you cancel the Unlimited AT&T 3G Data Plan for iPad or the Plan is not auto-renewed in the future, you will not be able to order the Unlimited Plan again.

You must contact AT&T on or before July 15th.

Sincerely,
The Apple Store Team

Just got off the phone with the nice AT&T people,

I called the number given in the email above, they sent me to another number, 1800 275 2273. I read off a few numbers for the lady on the phone, and bam! done 🙂

In total, it took about 10, maybe 15 minutes.

Or 5 days, considering I've been waiting on the unlimited data plan for that long.

MoBoarder -

Thanks for the other 800 number ( call AT&T Customer Service at 1-800-331-0500 ).
Called AT&T at that number, after about 5 minutes they had my 3g up and working.
Did require a hard bounce of the iPad (hold the off button until the "OFF Slider" appears. That did the trick.

Not too painful except for the rude clerk in the brick and mortar store, that thought any hope of grandfathering in was past.

I did ask today's tech more about the unlimited plan - if the iPad breaks or I purchase some future new device, the plan is transferable under those circumstances as long as I never change or cancel the plan tied to my iPad cellular number. We will see.

Thanks to all the great work, documentation and follow through on this discussion board. Best wishes to those still waiting for thier pre-June8th iPads or waiting to register their grandfathered unlimited plan.

One more thing - Under Cellular Data Account, it shows "There is no data plan" and under Full Account Overview it shows "Unlimited Pending". I suspect that will be like that until they verify my purchase date.

Ordered my iPad on the 5th, got it this past Wed. After reading this forum I was holding off until I had a nice speakerphone and plenty of time. Today, being Saturday, I had my doubts. I went in to the iPad and signed up for the 2Gb service, wrote down my IMEI and ICCIS numbers as well as the new AT&T assigned Mobile Cellular Data number. Then I got comfortable with the speaker phone and my computer...

Called the 1-866-640-5125 number

The immediate answer was the "normal" AT&T Cellular support line (same as if you dial 611 on your cell phone).

Automated system asked me to enter the cellular number I was calling in reference too - so I entered my iPad assigned number.

Immediately I was transfered to a real person. Asked for the email address I used to register (and I assume cell # was passed through). I told her what I wanted to do.

Long story short, 90 seconds later I was seeing a confirmation on the iPad Settings / General / Cellular / Account section that I was not signed up for the Unlimited plan. She had me test Internet connectivity - all is good.

I was told that Apple would verify on teh back end that I was eligible, and if not it would revert to 2Gb plan.

I would say the problems are resolved - total of less then 3 minutes on the phone and it is fixed.

I am still waiting to get mine! Last week it said my local apple store was sold out and I had to put my order on waiting list and once my order came in (which I had to pay for in advance) they would email me. Well, since it is sunday I wouldn't expect it to be in today. So I payed in advance and ordered a Wifi + 3G 64GB Model and a couple of accesories and am still waiting. Anyway, so I was showing a friend about the 3G at apple.com and it said 2gb of data for $25 instead of the unlimited, which really dissapointed me. 😟 Let's see what happend. Plus with the new iphone 4 it seems like apple forgot about the ipad!

Hello all,

I ordered two iPads on June 6. They came last week. I called AT&T at the number in this forum and was only on hold for 35 min max. The trick is to call as soon as they open. I tried calling one evening and decided there were too many people in their que. I work in a call center and know the call volume gets worse as the day goes on.

I had to call on two different days since the iPads arrived on two different days. Both times I was instructed to activate the 2GB plan and Apple would be contact to confirm the order was before June 7. I was told I would see an update on my iPad, an email, or phone call stating I've been upgraded to the unlimited plan.

Saturday I pull out my iPad and there is an email telling me that it appears I have purchased my iPad prior to June 7 and there was another number (1.800.331.0500) that I should call to have the plan upgraded to the unlimited plan.

I called the number and after a 10 min 26 sec call both plans were switched to the unlimited plan. I actually received the alert on the iPad saying it was upgraded before the reps system told him it was upgraded.

I've owned Macs for many years and am always pleased with them. Not thrilled that AT&T is my only choice, but was pleased with the service I receied to get my plan activated and upgraded.

Anyone know how we can verify that we are actually switched over to unlimited data? I did get the email previously posted here, but it reads like a regular "thanks for buying iPad" message, not a real confirmation.

It's been nine days for me since I called the number and the info under "Cellular plan" in the "settings" app still shows the 2GB option.

I just upgraded my plan today.

The initial rep told me that I did not qualify since I had waited until now to sign up for the unlimited plan. I purchased my iPad back on May 17th, but since I read of the grandfather policy I had waited until now - our Summer travel is just starting. She claimed that because I had taken delivery of the iPad prior to the end of the plan being offered and not yet purchased the plan that I could not qualify. Since I had not heard of this before, I pressed her on it. She transferred me to the iPad activation unit and then apologized for being wrong. A rep in that department then took care of me and made the switch.

Note: He did say that the window on this grandfather policy will not last for ever. First I had heard of this. And he said that if I cancel the account or if for any reason my credit card does not automatically pay within 7 days of the due date I will also loose the unlimited plan.

It was posted earlier the drop dead date to sign on board if you ordered your iPad before June 7 is July 14. After which time only those of registered will have it until we cancel it. Given streaming is dicy at best in some urban areas, it would appear the network just doesn't have the bandwidth traffic for more people. Still it would not hurt to be the "sticky wheel that gets the grease" and occasionally ask ATT to reconsider.

I bought my ipad before June 7th and didnt even buy my Micro Simm card that same day. (Don't ask why). I went out of the country and then heard about this craziness. I called 866-640-5125 and acted like I was going to activate a SIM card and told them I heard the unlimited plan was going to only be valid for people who purchased their devices prior to June 7th and then asked if it was true I had to do this by July 15th and the lady confirmed this with me this was true. She said sign up for the 2gig and select autorenew and call back in and they can put me on the unlimited plan. I immediately called a friend of mine and told him to walk in to an ATT store and pick me up a Micro SIM card and over night it to me. (Part 2 coming next)

Part 2... Next day I called 866-640-5125 which I believe is an AT&T number. I spoke to an agent and told her I wanted to upgrade to the unlimited plan. She had no idea what I was talking about and said the unlimited plan was over. I was persistent with her that I could sign up for it since I bought my ipad before June 7. After being on hold twice she then transfered me to a apple agent that deals with this. She asked me for my IMEI # and then in a few minutes I was mysteriously upgraded to the unlimted plan. She told me to keep an eye on my account sometimes the autorenew gets turned off and if you want to keep your unlimited plan ya better set it to auto renew. I started talking to her and the call center is in the east cost of Canada. not sure if she new exactly when I bought my ipad though. Never had to fax a reciept or anything. Hope this info helps.
