Seagate Momentus XT
Has anybody had experience with standard 7200 rpm seagate momentus HDD?
I am particularly worried by possible decrease in battery life or increases in vibration or noise.
Thanks.

Macbook white 2.4ghz, Mac OS X (10.6.3)
Yesterday I installed a Momentus xt 750gb in a white non unibody macbook core 2 duo 2.4, Mac os x 10.6.8.
I formatted and restored from time machine backup.
Until now it is working very fine. Startup time is halved. Itunes and iphoto open noticeably quicker than with the old 500gb wd scorpio black. I used to get a beachball just after opening itunes, this does not seem to happen anymore.
Coverflow if almost perfectly smooth, movies artwork are filled almost immediately.
I would say that the drive is slightly quiter than the wd, but I am not sure.
From what I have seen the upgrade was absolutely worth the money, I will post an update in a couple of weeks.
Now it's more than 3 weeks with the momentus xt 750gb.... it works great, has a lot of space and is fast. It may also have improved my battery life, but I could be wrong on that. In any case my 10.6.8 macbook 2.4ghtz with 4gb ram boots in 20/25 seconds and that is outstanding.
Time to close the thread.
Thanks all.
Hey,
how do I close the discussion? I already did this on other question I posted and I remember it was easy....
Thanks.
i'm glad to hear of your success. mine has been working well now for a few months, but it's the 4th replacement drive. i think it would be ok to leave the thread open - i don't think we have yet identified the root cause of the failures. part of the point of this thread was a poll to get a sample of people using this hardware and whether or not they had problems.. so far i've found one other user who had a similar sequence of failures for no known cause.
the problem may be linked to the specific model of macbook.
i've had trouble with installing in a 2011 13" macbook pro
i have had no trouble puting a 500GB momentus into a 2008 white 13" macbook
in the macbook pro, i had a string of drive failures with brand new drives and warranty replacements, and most recently i replaced the drive cable as well, since it was the only other component that was easy to replace. so far so good; alhough at least one prior drive lasted 6 months before failing.
Likewise my 500GB model still working great in my Early 2011 13" MBP no issues. I also installed the same model drive in a 2008 HP notebook DV7000 series no issues as well.

I have a Macbook Pro 3,1 (last 2007) ,,, CORE 2 DUO 2,4GHz, 17".
I need upgrade my MPB and i am thinking to buy a Seagate Momentus XT 750GB (Hybrid) or buy a SSD Crucial m4 of 256GB,,, too will install 6GB RAM.
What hard disk recommend me?
Sorry for my english, I write from Spain.
Greetings to all.
It's really about space IMO. If you need/want the space, the XT is a great drive, and has gotten more stable as it has grown over the past year.
The place you'll see the benifit of pure SSD, will be with many, many apps open, it will "slow down" less than the hybrid. Boot speeds are VERY close... just a few thoughts there.

I have put the hybrid drive in that EXACT computer with great results. look at my youtube channel (andrewwynn), i have a startup test after just putting the drive into the 17" 2007 MBP.
i had MAJOR problems with my 2008 unibody MBP which were resolved by using the optical bay for my drive.
you may want to look into a more cost effective solution, if you have the express card 34 slot like i do you may be able to have a dual-drive solution as I do.
I have a 64GB boot drive in the expresscard34 slot and a 750GB hybrid drive in the optical bay. (i tried using a jumper to keep the drive in sata-1 mode but it was acting odd so i put the drive in the optical bay and no problems now).

Just installed the Momentus XT 500GB in my 2008 13 Macbook. The drive will not sleep. I have taken all of the suggesntions I have found here on the forum: reset pram, SMC, change sleep time in Terminal. Nothing has worked and the drive just eats my battery non-stop because it wont' spin down when it isn't actively needed by the computer. Is there no solution for this? If not, I will call Seagate tomorrow to see if I can return the drive. Besides this awful flaw, it's a great drive.

Do it the same way as you did before.
Hi teof,
I'm planning to do the same thing you did almost 2 year ago...upgrading my late 2008 macbook harddrive (fujitsu MHZ2250BH, 250gb) with a Seagate Momentus XT 750gb SSHD.
I would like to know your experience after the upgrade..battery life, boot speed and overall performance. Furthermore, the item i'm observing is "ricertified", not new (second hand, repaired, ...) so i'm trying to calculare all the risks..
I would be glad to hear your opinion..thanks in advance! 🙂
