Sync Palm m500 to Mac OS 10.4.3. Possible?

I've just moved from using Mac OS 10.3.9 to 10.4.3 and I'd like to sync my "old" Palm m500 to it. With the previous OS I had Conduit manager v 3.2 and I could sync with no problems whatsoever. Now I wonder if I can sync Palm m500 with Tiger. I've been checking in Palm and Apple sites but I haven't found any useful information. Reading some of your comments in the forum I realize I might have problems using the new version of isync. On top of that I know my Palm is not precisely the latest model, but it works so well I don't fancy buying a new one. Can somebody help? Thanks.

When you updated to Mac OS X 10.4, iSync 2.1.1 would have been installed. To use this application with your Palm device, just launch it, choose Enable Palm OS Syncing… from the Devices menu, and follow the instructions which appear.

Once your device has been added, you may configure it using the drop-down pane which appears in iSync when you select the Palm icon in the main window.

To synchronize - particularly with other devices and the .Mac server - you should open the iSync Preferences… dialog and select or enable all three options under the General tab. Each time you synchronize, you should then launch iSync, select the Sync Now option from beneath the Sync Status icon in your menu bar, and press the HotSync button when prompted to do so by the dialog which appears.

Michael, thanks for your prompt reply, but the thing is that what I'm using is a brand new computer (sorry I didn't make it clear before). So it's not an update but a different machine with Mac OS 10.4.3. I'm still not sure of the steps to follow to do things properly. I can't enable Palm from the devices menu because I still haven't installed Palm desktop 4, I guess. Is that the first thing I have to do? I have read that then I won't need to install conduit manager. Is that right?

Palm recommends that for the m500 series of handheld organizers, that you install the Palm Desktop 4.2.1 version A, available here:

http://www.palm.com/us/support/macintosh/macdesk421.html

With this handheld, you need not first install software from the CD-ROM that was supplied with your device, as it does not contain unique software for your device.

After installing the Palm Desktop, Apple recommends that you first synchronize with it prior to configuring and using iSync. Once you've done that, launch iSync and select Enable Palm OS Syncing… from the Devices menu, and follow the instructions which appear. At the conclusion of this step, your device will appear in iSync. You can then press the Palm icon in its main window to drop down a configuration pane, which lets you specify how iSync interacts with specific contact groups and calendars.

If you intend to synchronize with other devices, including .Mac, you should also open the Preferences… dialog under the iSync menu, and check or enable all three options under the General tab. Then, each time you synchronize, you should…

• launch iSync
• select Sync Now from beneath the Sync Status icon in your menu bar, and
• press you HotSync button when prompted to do so by the dialog

And, when you've successfully done all this - and find youself unhappy with the manner in which iSync performs - you should consider purchasing and installing the far more flexible, robust, feature-rich and reliable synchronization software from Mark/Space: The Missing Sync for Palm OS. More information about that package is available here:

http://www.markspace.com/missingsync_palmos.php

One caution: The Missing Sync for Palm OS should be installed only after you have successfully synchronized at least once with both the Palm Desktop and with iSync.

Hi once again. I have followed your advice and now I've managed to install Palm Destktop. However, I can't synchronize. When I press the hotsync button on the base synchronization starts but very soon I get "Aplication Conduit manager has quitted" (well, that is roughly the translation into English, since I have it in Spanish) and "Volume is blocked". I've checked in the help sections both in Palm desktop and in Hotsync and I can't see what I'm doing wrong. The user in Palm and Desktop is the same.
