glad you're all fixed up now.

as I understand it, pkgutil --forget removes any reference to an install package in the permissions database, but won't remove the files

This matters, because many installer check for an application version & system version or a framework version, stored in a file within a framework...

in the case of Safari 4.0.5 L it looks for (among other things) /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Resources/Info.plist

specifically, the CFBundleShortVersionString entry, which it compares with '5531.22' and returns a 'newer' error message, halting the install, if a later version of webkit is discovered, and outputting the "This volume already has a newer version of Safari installed" that you saw.

I'm really getting fed up with Apple now, its starting to remind me of running Windows

I had a nightmare after updating to 10.6.3 and ended up having to do a complete reload of my system back to 10.6.2. Now I update Safari and I'm having a nightmare visiting certain sites, I think I really need to roll back to Safari 4. Thanks for the info above on how to do it.

I just installed Safari 5 yesterday. What a mistake. I love my Apple and this so far in a year and a half is the only big disappointment. Luckily I have had time machine set up pretty much since day one and a terrabyte Hp hard drive. I opened applications and dragged Safari5 into trash. Removed icon from dock. Opened time machine, applications, click on Safari from a date prior to Safari 5 install and hit restore. Drag new icon to dock after restore install. Back to 4.0.5 PHEW all is good now and it took about 2 minutes and my browser is smokin fast again.
IF you dont have a back up hard drive running time machine I highly suggest it. Its saved us a ton of times especially for homework docs. etc.

This is the most fool proof way to do this, and it will install it correctly including reverting WebKit (which is actually separate).

You can get Safari 4.0.5 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL877

With Pacifist, you drag the pkg in the DMG onto Pacifist, select the pkg (bottom most pkg), and you click install and keep the admin checkbox checked off. This will force a downgrade.

This is what I did, and not one problem, and I went back to the previous WebKit version, which for me was the thread that was crashing.

I followed maverick88's suggestions and found it very easy to replace Safari 5 with 4.0.5 - also took me about 2 minutes to get back to the previous version. Unfortunately, it hasn't rectified the damage done to some of my videos in iTunes (after downloading Safari 5 I lost a lot of the visuals on my videos, although the sound was still there) but I'm working on that!!
