External floppy drive not recognized

How do you get Tiger (OS 10.4.8) to recognize a USB-connected external floppy drive? The drive is listed by System Profiler, but invisible to the Finder. Under Finder Preferences I have checked all boxes. Although the administrator, I tried creating a new ID. I rebooted multiple times. I confirmed the connection in terms of cleanliness and snug fit; I replugged the cable in each port; and I know that this external drive, made by Teac, works in a PC.

Thank you and thanks, too, to Texas Mac Man. Indeed, I tried some of the Fix-It techniques to no avail, but, to fast forward, I believe that I now have the answer. Apparently, System X (I have upgraded to 10.4.11) can recognize PC diskettes, but only Mac diskettes created under System 9.2 and above. Older Mac diskettes or blank diskettes, whether PC or Mac, are invisible to the System X Finder even when the diskettes themselves are intact, as I can confirm under System 9.1. Before setting out to restore old files, I perhaps should have been aware of this limitation of System X, but Apple, I believe, was less than forthcoming in its utilities, alerts, tech notes, and telephone support, none of which were of much assistance. Isn't it curious that Windows 7, for all its faults, can go back in time and fetch Vista, XP, Windows 2000, Millenium, and Windows 95 media, whereas Apple forces the herd to move along to new pastures. Apple's penchant for incompatibility and blindsiding of customers are no way to keep them.

Your conclusions regarding systems previous to 9.2 are not supported by any technical information I have ever read. I have used diskettes extensively, in Industry and in Macs, and I do not believe your conclusions are correct.

• At system 8, Macs dropped support for 400K single-sided diskettes and ProDOS diskettes. You cannot read those in your USB-connected drive anyway.

• 800K Mac diskettes will not be supported in that drive, regardless of what version of Mac OS created them. Diskette 2D or 2DD (with a single punch-out used for the write-protect tab) will only be recognized if written in IBM-compatible 720K format. \[800K Mac diskette drives used a variable-speed motor, which was never adopted by other manufacturers.]

• The oxides used on 2DD and HD diskettes are not the same, and are not interchangeable.
