iTunes hang while backing up my iPad or iPhone 3GS

the problem:
upon connecting my iPad or iPhone to my PC vis USB,
1. iTune 9.1.1 on Vista PC, hang or keep doing "Backing up " *" ... for hours
2. my iPad or iPhone say "Sync in Progress"

my setting:
1. Vista 32 bit, SP2
2. iTunes 91.1.1.12
3. device: iPad or iPhone 3GS

what I have tried:
Completely restored iPhone 3GS yesterday and went through the whole activation, etc.
but today it still hang at Backing up (looks like it never finish);
then I connect with my iPad, and the backing up of iPad does not finish either.
hang == >1 hours.

powered down iPhone and powered it up;
reboot my PC;
the hang persists.

I did install Vista Service Pack 2 recently.

Well. I spoke too soon.

1. as soon as I reinstall the iTunes app, both my iPad and iPhone 3GS works fine.

2. But this morning, when I connected my iPhone 3GS, it stuck in Backup forever, again.

could this be a problem, because I am switching back and forth between iPad and iPhone on the same PC?

Has anyone else who has both, experiences the same problem?

Help.

I had the same issue (try to back up, but hangs up 7/8 of the way) while upgrading to iOS4

I tried a few things at once, but got it to work:
1) updated my apps
2) Backed up my pics onto hard drive then removed them from phone
3) Stopped the process ("MDCrashReporter.exe") in Task Manager

Got it to work now! Thanks for the advice everyone!

I am experiencing the same problem with my iPad on a Windows 7 PC. iTunes asked me if I wanted to upgrade to iOs 5. I said yes, and it downloaded. Then my iPad said "Sync in Progress" and iTunes on my PC just sat there, frozen, on the "Backing up iPad" step-- before installing iOs 5 to the device.

Someone help us!!! This is obviously a very common problem!

This happened to me as well. I called Apple and was with tech support for about 3 hours. The first thing to do is uninstall all components from your computer. There is a specific order in which to uninstall, so make sure you go to apples site and look that up.

If that doesn't fix your problem... You'll eventually get an error message -5000. This error does not exist yet. (I was the first one to have it) So the techs are working on it and there wil be an update sometime this week. They know it ***** and apple support is SOOO nice. If you absolutely can't wait (like myself) try using another computer. That's what did the trick for me.

Now... I also had issues with that, in I would get error 3194 (which does exist, don't worry) but I couldnt do anything to fix it. If this happens for you:

When you plug in your device click "later"

make a backup of your device first

Then click the "restore" option; this will restore to factory settings and the run the update without saving a backup

I had to use both my computers to do this, because magically... What didn't work on one worked on the other

after that, it worked fine

If you don't have 2 computers and don't want to use someone else's all you can do is wait. I know it ***** BELIEVE ME! But apple is working as fast as they can. The thing is apple update and windows update came out at the same time. So thy weren't prepared. (I have also tried uninstalling all my windows updates and restoring my computer to an earlier point, but to no avail) They are doing their best, and it should be ready within a week.

Hope this helps/gives y'all some hope!
