Deleting page numbering in Pages

I have recently prepared a 182 page book for printing. The original document was written in WORD®. The page numbering is not completely in the footer strip, but across the upper line of the footer box. I would like to delete these numbers, but cannot highlight them nor remove them. They behave as page numbers, but cannot be removed. If I try to insert page numbers the same numbers appear in the footer box. Has anyone a bright idea how I can delete them?

The Word page numbering is in non-selectable boxes
Format > Advanced > Make Master Objects Selectable.
Select the number and you'll get blue squares.
Delete the object. You have to do this for all page numbers.
Now you can use the built in page numbering in Pages.
