How to save mail attachments?
HOw does one save attachments to documents when they arrive in a mail message?
IPAD, iPhone OS 3.1.3
For pictures-only, press and hold the image in the email. You will get a pop-up window for saving options.

I bought doc to go app. and when i touch top of screen of attahment i get option to open in "docs to go" and then i can save. hope this helps

Do you have goodreader or something similar? I am not aware of a save option for anything other than photos... You have to open in an app that can read the files and save there...
My App *Send Doc* lets you do this. Install Send Doc, then, in your iPhone email, press and hold the icon of the attachment you want to save. After a second or two a menu appears which allows you to save the attachment.

Yes it looks as if Apple in 10.8.2 has removed the dropdown menu that allows the user to save photo attachment/s to iPhoto or a Folder, also along with the feature to save attachment/s to a folder etc by way of the same menu.
What appears to still be in place is the ability to Shift or Command click photos and then hold down the Control key and click again to show the Contextual menu allows the user to Export photos to iPhoto or to choose other options.
Not as simple or graceful, but functional.
