buying used iPhone-What to check?

I'm going to buy a used iPhone 2g today from an individual from Craigslist.

What should I check on the phone to make sure it's working correctly? I've never used an iPhone before.

I assume it does some self-check when it's turned on. I will put in my simm card from my older cell phone. It should recognize it and be able to make a call, right?

What can go wrong in an iPhone? I should check for bad "keyboard" touch screen. I open the keyboard program and touch all the letters, make sure they work.

How do I make sure it recognizes/shows 8 G RAM?

What else?

Thank you,
Bill

First off its not 8 G RAM, its 8gb of "harddrive" space.

but heres my list of what to do
- turn on
-test call
-(drawing app) and try filling the screen (screen test).
-take a picture of a solid color, try, red, blue, yellow, white, black, (color test)
- connect to wifi to test
-connect to internet (Edge connection)
-open some apps.
-check volume working, (speaker and control)
-silent switch
-vibration (should go off when you hit silent switch)
- others?
