Safari 5 Font Rendering Problem

Since installing Safari 5, I am seeing certain websites where the body text appears to have broken sub-pixel antialiasing. To confuse matters further, this problem can show in text on one part of a page, but not in others.

Here is an example of what I see: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/06/08/chinainternetstrategy/

Here's a screenshot of the problem, with Safari 5 on the left and Chrome on the right (which doesn't have the problem - weird, I know; they're both WebKit browsers!)

I've verified all my fonts and resolved all my duplicates.

Cross posting...

Some in that thread seem to suggest 5.0.1 fixes the problem. I do see improvements as sites like Yahoo are now behaving correctly.

However, I'm not sure if the problem is completely fixed. I just noticed the issue with the ESPN site ( http://espn.go.com).

Safari: http://yfrog.com/f/ju1mbp/
Chrome: http://yfrog.com/f/16ylpp/

As you can see, the fonts are more jagged in Safari (the topmost menu row as well as the caption in the video section are the most evident). So 5.0.1 did something but not all the way?

I'm at least glad to see this is a common problem affecting many different users.

I've noticed on SOME pages, the flash/video will only affect the text within the same division of the website. I've seen some sites where the text will look fine in a different column of a site.

For example: http://a.yfrog.com/img29/7427/2xi.png

Notice the text in the upper part of the page looks fine, but in the section featuring the articles, there's a flash ad in between some of the rows. It seems to only affect the text in that particular part of the page.

Keep us all posted if any of you figure out any more information!

Yeah, it's definitely somehow linked with Flash 10.1, turning adblock on proves this. However, there are a lot of sites that use Flash for menus and whatnot, so simply uninstalling flash altogether is not really practical nor is it a fix. Not sure whether this is the fault of Safari 5 or Flash 10.1, but I'm running the latest versions of both and still getting this problem.

Here's another thread on this issue:

Due to the way the page loads, I can see the body text before the page is done loading. And it's fine right up until the page is done loading, at which point it goes nasty.

ditto to your situation---i had this start a month or so ago and noticed it when i was reading MacDailyNews.com. symptoms exactly as you describe. i was emailing back and forth with them for a while and sending screenshots (which never quite captured how bad the text really looks), but once we figured the problem wasn't on their end, i just gave up on it. it only happened on my iMac, so i've been using my MacBook a lot more!!
