Further to my previous reply to Mcfosters:
(1) It works fine with the card reader that came with the Apple camera connection kit. (I did not have that handy at the time I tried with the SanDisk reader.)
(2) Some research indicated that Apple only supports the camera connection kit for use with iPads; not iPhones.

This worked to get my Sony to connect to my iPhone. The setting on the camera was USB Power Supply. I turned that to off and connected in the order you gave. Loaded the import option in Photos.

Im now having this problem my Nikon DSLR has never connected via the kit, but I used to take the card out and import via the card reader but now it just comes up as this attachment uses to much power.
Not exactly the solution I needed, but it helped.
I have a Sony DSC RX100 M3. Instead of setting the Menu/Tools/USB Connection to "Mass Storage" I enabled "AUTO."
Works.
