SD card reader not working on iMac

The SD card reader slot on my iMac has stopped picking up cards. When I insert a card, it fails to mount.
This used to work fine, and still does if a card is inserted while booting up. But after it has been ejected, it will fail to mount again.

I've seen suggestions that this is a hardware issue.
As this sounds very unlikely - can anyone confirm?
Are other experience this?
Is there a bug fix due?

thanks

yep! my VMware is hijacking the SD card however Parallels does not! I have both installed for different purposes and never had this issue with Parallels but I just installed VMware Fusion 6 and I've got to deal with this issue now.

Ok this is what found so far!

First, unique to my setup I'm using VMware Fusion 6 so I found the following note from VMware:

"This issue occurs on Macs with an SDXC (SD extended capacity) card slot and not on Macs with an SD card slot.

This issue occurs because the SDXC card slot included in newer Mac models is connected to the Mac using the PCIe bus and not using the USB bus that the original SD card slot uses. Therefore, the SDXC card slot cannot be connected to a virtual machine as a USB device."

Well that is ONE problem! But I found out that I have TWO problems!!!

I also found out that there is a SD card brand Qmemory that DOES NOT enumerate on the SDXC card slot. So you could have a SD card that is not compatible with the SDXC.

In that case I was able to fix the problem by connecting an external SD Card Reader to the USB interface and then bingo! Now my Macbook can access that SD card and even the VMware but via the external reader.

Going back to the problem #1 here is a link to the solution from VMware:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=display KC&externalId=1035825

Now I can access the SD cards from the SDXC or external SD reader from OS X and from VMware.

Thanks for the tip, Andi. That worked for my 2012 15" MacBook Pro as well. FYI to other MBP owners...the switch is built into the left side of the card reader, so that the left edge of the card is supposed to depress it. Just as Andi suggested, I used a toothpick to jiggle it around a bit, and then tried my card again, and sure enough, it mounted up as usual. It's too bad Apple made (or chose a supplier who made) this reader's "trigger" switch so unreliable...

Haven't read every post in the thread, but I found something that works for me (MBPro, mid-2010):

Put the SD card in about 1/8th inch less than fully snug. That seems to work. I pushed in gradually by about 1/8th inch, and waited. It took. When I pushed it in the final 1/8th inch, the Mac complained it had been "ejected". Go figure. Perhaps the slot's a tad too deep?
