SD card reader not working on iMac

The SD card reader slot on my iMac has stopped picking up cards. When I insert a card, it fails to mount.
This used to work fine, and still does if a card is inserted while booting up. But after it has been ejected, it will fail to mount again.

I've seen suggestions that this is a hardware issue.
As this sounds very unlikely - can anyone confirm?
Are other experience this?
Is there a bug fix due?

I also had a look inside the SD reader, after battling with this problem for months, and the contacts weren't exactly shiny. The reader would only work after a restart, so this time I thought of cleaning it with Isopropyl alcohol. I took a small piece of card and wrapped some cloth around it, and soaked the end of the cloth in the Isopropyl alcohol. After giving the contacts a good cleaning, I tried the SD card again without a restart and it worked straight away. .

Did the same things as well and soon as I stopped dropbox it started picking up my SD card slot again

Thanks for your post Landin. I was having the same issue as this thread: my reader not mounting my disk. Your resolution gave me the idea that my contacts in the reader may be dusty. So, I blew some compressed air into the slot and the reader now mounts the disk just fine.

Sir, you are the MVP! After 6 years of being posted, your fix is still the answer! I've had Parallels and now switched to Virtual Box and was having this issue, now I know.

Yes Yes...worked for me too. Got some canned air and blew in it and it works fine now!!

7 long years later, I can confirm this 🙂 I opened VMWare Fusion and suddenly the SD card got mounted. Thank you!
