SD card reader not working on iMac

Have you tried downloading the combo update to 10.6.4 and applying that? It's nearly as good as re-installing your OS, unlike the "Software Update" version.

If that doesn't work, a quick reinstall of Snow Leopard followed by the combo may help. It's a harmless process that won't break anything - but be sure you have a backup beforehand anyway, of course.

I have the same problem as well. SD card doesn't get recognised unless i reboot it. And once i eject the card and re-inset it again, the Imac doesn't recognise it again...

I suspect it has got to do with the OS X 10.6.4

This has just happened to me today. I put pictures on the computer yesterday just fine and then I went to put more on today and the computer is just not responding when I push the SD card in.

This happened to me yesterday, with the same symptoms that others have described. I've been using the SD slot every few days for months without any problems. Now there's no response to inserting an SD card (I've tried two). If I shut down and restart with the card in place, it gets mounted normally and works perfectly. But then after I eject and remove it, back to no response.

I have a USB card-reader, and that's working fine with the same SD cards.

The same exact problem happened to me last night. It was working fine since I bought it back in February. Now, I have to reboot it with the SD card in the slot for it to be recognized. I also am outside of the 90 day support.

I am also having the same problem with my iMac 27 running 10.6.4

Was working fine up until a few days ago. Come on Apple, this is obviously a problem. Luckily I have a USB card reader but that is not as convenient due to the amount of USB peripherals I have attached. Plus I paid a lot for the iMac and the SD card reader was part of the reason I upgraded.

Still love all my Apple gadgets and so pleased at some of the photo projects I have recently created.

... same problem: two months old iMac 27, the SD card slot worked fine until yesterday and all of a sudden does not recognize the cards any more. The SD cards are okay, one is a SD-USB card that works in the USB slot but not in the card reader.

Apple: find a solution if this is a software problem! It would be a nightmare to carry the iMac to an ASP for nothing.

Having the same problem, it reads my SD cards fine, but if I dismount one and pull it out, take some pics, and plug it back in later in the day it just wont mount at all. I know it works, it just needs a reboot for some stupid reason each time you want to use it!!!! This needs to be resolved ASAP!

Same here. iMac 27" (Late 2009). Running Mac OS X 10.6.4.

Built-in SD card reader sees the card once after doing a reboot but after having ejected the card it's no longer recognized (until rebooting again).

not only iMac has this problem ... i have a new macbook pro 13 inch with a card slot that worked fine, until a month ago. suddenly no more recognition of cards. i feel like it has to do with a software update somewhere in June. i hope this is solved soon.

Although this isn't a long term fix - I've found that if you unplug any other USB devices connected to the computer, this seems to help with this SD reader problem.
