iPad Safari crashing regularly

Safari on my iPad is crashing fairly frequently; sometimes when I restart it retains the pages that were previously open, and sometimes not.

Have not yet established a pattern, but it seems prevalent on very large pages (for example pages with many images) and on pages with embedded video (particularly Flash).

Anyone else experiencing the same issue and/or have any further information? Anybody using a browser other than Safari on the iPad?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Restoring didn't help, but I've had some success by boosting the WiFi signal. I added an additional (new two channel) AirPort Express to my local network, and that seems to have mitigated the problem. Maybe it's a queuing issue of some sort. I'll be trying out the device outside my local network this coming week; I'll have to enable the 3G (Verizon) service. But, I do find the performance of Safari very erratic, and I don't think it has anything to do with the user or the usage.

My iPad safari crashes regularly and almost predictably when viewing Tumblr (I haven't found a tumblr app I like, so I have preferred to view it in safari). This just started happening with newest iPad iOS upgrade, it was very stable before. It does not crash when I am using it to view normal web pages that are not so "image heavy".

Thanks, Sam, clearing the cache worked even without restore - also it could be that an improved Wifi signal helped. I think an earlier commentor suggested that safari doesn't seem to be dumping or releasing images that are no longer on the page. Tumblr is probably unique because it can have a seemingly endless supply of images on the same page, same is potentially true for image heavy sites like flickr, etc. Thanks for the reminder to empty the cache, though it doesnt seem as though I should have to do that - hopefully apple will fix in future updates.

Kayemtee- I agree 100% with your input about the crashes. My iPad 1 was very stable and surfed like a champ until the last iOS upgrade. It bugs out of Safari pages all the time now. For instance, I was trying to look up something on Fandango this morning. After inputting all the search criteria it cycled and cycled and then just timed out when the found page was ready to load. It starts loading the page and when it is almost finished back to the home screen it goes.

I have Atomic Browser loaded on the iPad so I may just start using that in hopes that I can avoid the constant crashes.

I'm going to see whether I can understand this better.

1. Have any of you taken it in to the Åpple Store Genius bar?

2. Does it happen only on wifi or on 3G?

3. Does emptying the cache help?

4. Is it an AT&T or Verizon 3G model or wifi only?

If it happens only on wifi, your router may be dual-band, or use a draft version of the wireless N standard and may be causing this issue.

Upgrade your router firmware and use this article for more help

The Linksys WRT160N is compatible with the ipad and is fairly inexpensive.

This later article recommends resetting your network settings. How many people have tried doing that? Does the problem get better when the power cable is unplugged from the router for 2 minutes and then put back in? This may also suggest a router problem.

Edit: I have an AT&T ipad 2 and Netgear equipment (WRT54G) not N, not dual-band, although maybe MIMO, and do not have this issue. Some Netgear N routers will cause difficulty connecting.

I really think you ought to take it in to an apple authorized service provider/genius bar. If they can't cause it to happen there, it may be your wireless router. Some wireless routers have a mode setting, try changing it to "G only". But it might be easiest to replace the router.

If you haven't done a restore, doing that and setting up as new will eliminate software on the ipad as a possibility.

Otherwise, it's hardware or network configuration.

We do not troubleshoot betas here. They are betas, meaning they are buggy. If you have iOS 5, you should be a developer and should have access to the ADC Bug reporter. Please report bugs there. Nobody that I know with an ipad has this problem, except as noted here, when there's some incompatibility between the router and the ipad, and sometimes apparently also it can be a cache issue.

My iPad 1 was crashing terribly on Safari. I couldn't even log into Netflix even after clearing the cache and deleting the temporary internet files. The last straw was losing my Safari icon in the baseline menu bar. I eventually had to RESET everything.

My favorites were not changed but I did have to re-enter all the saved login information for my commonly used sites. Everything seems back to normal now and there haven't been any problems on Netflix or the other pages I routinely browse.

Good luck.

This raises the question of what you mean by a crash. The dock at the bottom of the ipad's home screen is customizable, and you must have accidentally dragged it off. It is still accessible on your home screen and via search. You can then drag it back.

Glad the reset fixed it. You are correct it doesn't remember wifi passwords etc. for your security.
