Tried power cycling iPad. Safari is still crashing. Will try disabling JavaScript.

Disabling Java DOES seem to rectify the crashes, only problem is it means 90% of web sites are virtually unusable without Java.
Apple just need to fix the bug, and soon.

Dec 23, 2011 4:40 PM in response to Rob Bruenby wilfrago,Safari on iPad 1 and iOS 5.0.1 is almost unusable!
I think it's a memory management poblem. My iPad crashes with other apps too, but not so often as it does with Safari in iOS 5.0.1. I have done everything I have read in the web an nothing worked.
I don't want to surf the web with my iPad anymore. It's always crashing!
If you find a video included in a page sometimes it plays, sometimes only the sound plays and the video window is black, sometimes Safari crashes...
My iPad: iPad 1, 64 GB, WiFi, not jailbroken, no apps running in the background, and.... Safari crashing all the time.
I haven't tried other browsers. Which one can any of you recommend?
Thanks.

Dec 23, 2011 4:46 PM in response to wilfragoby Vx99,I don't think the problem relates to memory, I have installed RAM doctor to keep an eye for exactly that reason, I had a Safari crash on a forum about an hour ago with about 260MB of free memory on the iPad at the time.

Dec 23, 2011 8:04 PM in response to Rob Bruenby karenvb,Well, add me to the list. I always run only 2 or 3 apps, at most, at the same time and my iPad1 has only now just started crashing on me. It happens daily but not, so far, to the extent other people are describing. The latest Kobo and Gossip Junkie apps updates crash pretty regularly on me now too so I'm inclined to believe there's an app conflict somewhere. It reminds me of the old Mac days when we had to deal with permission conflicts.
(I forgot to add to my post that I am also writing about crashing in Safari.)

Dec 24, 2011 11:47 PM in response to Rob Bruenby jestabrook,Same exact problem here with my ipad. It crashes very often, once a minute or more. It is not usable anymore for the main purpose I bought it for. iOS 5 has not been kind to the ipad 1 at least.

Dec 24, 2011 11:54 PM in response to Rob Bruenby iRamsu,Mine too. It is getting so annoying I'm thinking of throwing my ioad 2 on the ground the next time it happens and buying a real tablet. Most annoying part is that it doesnt save what you were writing.

Dec 25, 2011 4:34 AM in response to Rob Bruenby Tribeca90,The suggestions to move non apple created apps away from the home page and to turn off spotlight search did not solve the problem for me.

Dec 25, 2011 7:24 AM in response to Tribeca90by Vx99,There is absolutely no reason it would, I have never seen anything from Apple suggesting any sort of priority over the home page. Turning off spotlight will speed up a little, but not to any extent that will cause memory crashes.
I also doubt that the Safari crashes are memory related, I have had multiple crashes of Safari while having over 250MB of free RAM. I still suspect it is a Java problem as turning off Java script stops the crashes (but unfortunately makes most websites almost impossible to navigate).

Dec 25, 2011 7:24 AM in response to Tribeca90by Pitlos,This is what i did .First i didnt any crash on 4.3.3 genuine OS install.
Second ,i update to 5.0 .
during the processus of this update the pre or post install crashing at this point no possibility to return to 4.3.3.
Four ,i did a restore from itune management software .It restores on a IOS 5.0 basic .Ive reinstalled all stuff after that.
N.B In this place everybody talks of DFU Mode ,I Know i know..
but when the time comes to me to did a restore ,the (DFU)mode was not in my head i tell you .
je fais la restoration instinctivement sans connaitre le dfu ni sans mettre le ipad 2 à off ou à on j'ai juste branche le ideviceand clic restore.
J'ai remarqué que IOS 5 semble comsommer plus de batterie rapidement
Happy XMAS ALL

Dec 25, 2011 7:27 AM in response to Tribeca90by Vx99,What I do suggest is EVERYONE emails Apple and gives feedback about the iOS 5 crashes.

Dec 25, 2011 10:55 AM in response to Vx99by Sam Katz1,I suggest contacting technical support.
This is a support issue.
But, try a DFU restore first.
You may also want to experiment clearing the website data in the settings app.

Dec 25, 2011 10:57 AM in response to Sam Katz1by Sam Katz1,This is not a bug. Feedback will not give them enough information. They need to triage it, which means you need to call them or go in, or follow the instructions here.
