When i insert any DVD, the DVD player comes up and starts playing the movie, but i can only hear it playing and the screen stays black and doesn't show the video.
Hi sany42 welcome to the forums. You don't say which MacBook Pro you are using. Which graphic chip is running? Do you use third party software to manage your graphic processor?? Many questions. If you are running on the Nividia try switching to the integrated Intel. I do not know why this is happening, but it appears to be a issue on my MacBook6,2 as well. Hope this helps.

I had the same problem. Sometimes the DVD Player would have no video although audio played. I have a MacBook Pro i7 machine. The rest of the display was fine, just the DVD Player window was black. I installed gfxCardStatus and discovered that if I was using the NVIDIA graphics then the DVD PLayer window was black, but if I switched to Integrated Intel Graphics it worked fine.
Hi, im new to this but im having the same problem no video - black screen but still have audio, has anyone figured out how to fix it in plain language please, i bought the computer off the shelf with no changes so what it came with it has in terms of graphics etc. Its a new macbook pro from july this year. Help please.....
My son's very new 15 inch Macbook Pro just had the same problem this afternoon. All software and firmware is up to date. It has been starting in 64 bit mode with no issues for the last month. With DVD's I had audio but no video. The only solution I found was to restart the macbook in 32 bit (default) mode. Viola, DVD's run perfectly. Don't know if it will solve anyone else's problem but I suspect a firmware/software issue with this particular macbook model. (Apple DVD player is a 32 bit application) My slightly older 17 inch macbook runs dvd's well in 64 bit startup mode. Go figure. Hope this helps someone!
Guys resolved this by uninstalling a 3rd party app called magicpref for the magic mouse and my DVD player is good as new audio and video hope this help you solve your issue
Rebooting in 32-bit mode seemed to fix my issue as well. Perhaps doing a combo update of 10.6.4 in 64-bit mode would allow DVDs to play in 64-bit mode?
I discovered that if the i7 Mac Book Pro is booted in 64 bit mode then the video never shows using the dedicated graphics chip but always works using the integrated Intel graphics chip. I have switched back to 32 bit mode.
I have the same problem. Changing it to 32bit fixed the issue. But what is the point of having a 64bit machine when you cannot make it work right? I hope this issue gets fixed on some update or maybe Lion.
This is not a solution for the built-in DVD player app, but it will allow you to play DVDs and other video files properly in 64-bit mode. You can use the 64-bit version of VLC which can be downloaded from the videolan.org website, and it will play a DVD just fine.
