iPad won't restore

Hey all I'm having some issues restoring my iPad. I tried to restore it yesterday and right near the end the progress bar (on both the iPad and iTunes) just hung there. After a while I disconnected and tried again. Same issue. So I thought maybe I got a corrupted .ipsw so I re-downloaded and same thing. Tried to restore in my troubleshooting account, same thing. So I kind of just gave up last night. Today I come home to try and give it another go and this time I received a 1604 error. I changed the usb port I was using (on my '07 Macbook) and it just hung like the night before. I've tried putting it into recovery mode (although I'm pretty sure it's been stuck in it since last night) and restoring and nothing. Tried the troubleshooting account and got a 1604 error once and still getting the progress bar to hang.

I'm not sure what I can do now... it just won't restore. I tried a different usb cable so it's not that. I've yet to try a different computer (will do tomorrow). Don't think it's a software issue with iTunes or the .ipsw. So just looking to see if anyone else can offer some advice before I give AC a call.

Thanks.

Hi,
I was having same problem for last couple of days, installed and uninstalled itunes few times but did not worked.
I'm using windows XP , This are the steps I took ,and it finally got working.
I uninstalled these ,6, programs from windows.start menu > control panel > add or remove a program : #1 itunes
#2 quick time #3 apple software #4 apple mobile device #5 Banjour #6 apple applications.
In addition, I had to delete the itunes file from documents start menu> my documents > My music > itunes.
Shut down and restarted windows and downloaded an older version of iTunes 10.0.0.68.
Hope this help some one out there.

XbGuy, thank you. Thank you. Thank you. 🙂 I was getting a bit frustrated, until I saw your post...then I knew that was my problem! Sure enough it was. Your link removed the wifi sync and got me up and running again. I was trying to remove the JB anyway, and update to the new iPad software. So now I have a fresh iPad install and software to work with and am restoring my last backup (hopefully everything is there).

I am having a similar problem... I bought a MacBook Pro that has gone through 6 hard drives & repairs by Apple since August, so it is far from reliable, but that's not why I'm posting, but it IS why I just bought a used ipad..

I travel & am tired of carrying 2 laptops (my old reliable G4 Powerbook and the new one that keeps killing hard drives) so I bought a used ipad 1st gen 64G wifi, 3G (although I only plan to use the wifi). It arrived today & worked perfectly, but had the previous owners data on it, including over 1400 songs & 800+ photos. I was deleting one-by-one, then found the DELETE & RESTORE command in settings. It has now been on the black screen with just the Apple logo (showing a crack in the apple) and the spinning compass-like lines for 7 hours! Could it still be deleting & restoring? Or is it not finding an operating system? I had not regisered it or synced it to any of my computers (I own the MacBook Pro, and the last model desktop with Snow Leopard, and the old G4 Powerbook. If I attempt to sync it with one of my computers, will it restore the OS & Apps on the ipad? I had assumed the command I found in SETTINGS would restore the factory settings, but I just have the black screen with the Apple & spinning lines & cannot even power it down. Nothing happens when I hit the SLEEP button or anything others. It seems stuck in this mode. HELP!

Thanks for this suggestion! My iPad suffered some minor water damage and it was stuck in recovery mode. I connected to iTunes and downloaded the upgrade, but it wouldn't restore afterward. I downloaded the free trial software from Wondershare Dr. Fone at http://www.wondershare.net/data-recovery-mac/mac-iphone-data-recovery.html and in the "Fix Operating System", I obtained the link to download the iPad update manually. I switched the iPad update that was in the iTunes library with the new manual download, and it restored!

Your tip helped me un-brick my iPad!! Thank you SO MUCH! I had done the DFU mode restore over again at least 12 times before seeing your post. I did this and then let the restore thing run over night...came back this morning and it was still giving me error (14) so I thought, one more time before I decide to take it to an Apple store...and I was so surprised to see it worked. NOW, I did not do the restore from update because I had tried that yesterday before getting into the bricked mode. I had seen some freezing and then spontaneous rebooting for at least a month, it got so bad that I could not even read a line of an email before it rebooted on me (very frustrating) so I thought restoring should help...apparently some app I had or the data in it was causing that to happen because after it restored and used my last sync to restore my data and apps, it was back right where it had been ...reboot loop. Next, I did the DFU mode process trying to wipe it completely and it refused to work...got a different code after each try, but most common ones were (14) and (2003). After deleting the iPad update file and doing that again (twice) It worked!
