Reserved for Store Pickup, No pre-order and Ship to Store!

I'm reading all these discussions and my head is exploding. I was up @ 4am yesterday banging away like you all.

My criteria was this; I was eligible for upgrade @ $199 with the activation fee waived (sweet). I wanted to pick the phone up at my Apple store because I trust it more then brown.

When I clicked the pre-order link, there was NO option to have it sent to the store, it could only be sent to my house. Let me repeat that, NO option to send anywhere but house. It even says it "Pre-order your iPhone 4 from the Apple Online Store and we’ll ship it free — directly to your door and ready to use."

So I went to the reserve in store process. There was NO WAY TO PAY for it up front. Let me repeat that; NO WAY TO PAY for the reserved phone. So I received my confirmation email and said there is a phone waiting for me on the 24th!

I called 2 Apple stores and chatted online with 3 Apple support people and they ALL, every single 1 of them, said the same exact thing. The only way to pickup in the store is to go through the reservation process. The store will have 2 lines, reserved and general. The reserved will be there all day for you to pick up.

So, does anyone have some proof that you pre-ordered it, paid for it and have it sent to your Apple store, not your home to pick up?

Just some more information.

I spoke with another Apple rep, the store has a max number of phones they can order for reserves. Say 1000. When they hit the 1000 reserve, they close reservations for the day. So, if you try and reserve anymore, you will not get it that day. So, if you received your confirmation, the store will have a phone for you. And you pay when you get it.

Prior to pre-orders started on 06/15/2010 at 4am ET:

Apple Online Store > pay > charge to credit card for example when shipped
Apple Retail Store > pay when pickup

Currently:

Apple Online Store > pay > ship by July 2nd
Apple Retail Store > Currently, there are no reservations available. But you can still pick up an iPhone on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 7 a.m. on June 24. (i'm sure they will open beyond normal business hours until midnight or later).

That is adding confusion.
The point is, if you go to the Apple online store, you have 2 things you can do;
Pre-order = pay and ship ONLY to home
OR
Reserve for pickup at Apple sore = get confirmation email, go to Apple store on the date in confirmation, pickup the iPhone waiting for you, pay.

If you were able to pay AND ship to Apple store, I want to know. There was some concern that if you did not pay for it and just reserved it at the Apple store, it means nothing. That's NOT true.

Hopefully you printed the page stating what you quote below. You may be ok with or without it, but having it would be he best assurance you can have. I printed mine/saved webarchive, but also got an email. You might try contacting the Apple Store where you will do pick-up and ask when they get the list of reservations (presuming they get a list). They may not have it now, but surely at some date before June 24 they will. Also, when the dust clears, Apple Customer Service and or AT&T will know about your reservation. Good Luck!!

This time for this phone things are very confusing. I preordered yesterday for in store pickup got through the verification process saw that all my data and cell plan info were correct. Then at the end I got the message "see you at the store". Bring picture id. Nothing else, no confirming email as of today, nothing showing under my account in the on line store. I just came from the store that I picked for my phone to go to and there is nothing in their system either. So I went down to the AT&T store in that mall and preordered it there, no issues. It's just as well since I'm ordering it under my wife's number to get the discount and would have to go there any way to make the switch. I've read other posts from people that saw the same thing on line that I did when they ordered, "see you at the store" but no other confirmation. I'm going to assume that it means the order did not go through. So keep that in mind if you got what I did.

If you received a confirmation email, Yes you do.

If your concerned or just paranoid like me do this; I called the Apple store I reserved it with and asked them do "I have a phone on the reserved list?"
Gave them my first and last name, 1 minute later; "Yes, we have a 16G black iPhone reserved for you."

That should really stop any worry.

Just talked to a thankfully patient, helpful guy at my local Apple store.

You're right. There are two options in-store:

1) Reservations: You don't pay until you get there, you're allowed in before the walk-ins.

2) Walk-ins: They only get a phone once everyone in the reservation line has gotten theirs.

Pre-order, pre-pay will ONLY be sent to your house.

It's confusing only because the Apple site said pre-order yours today...home delivery or in-store pick-up.

If you got a confirmation email, print it out and bring it with you, you're golden. If not, sometimes they get backed up. I'd print out the reservation info on the site if you can (I got mind through the store app and there's a place to check reservations and it's still there.) Or at least make sure you can access your reservation info via your phone. I don't know what it means if you don't get a confirmation email, but I'd bring your reservation info in hopes that it will be enough. Otherwise, I guess just stand in the walk-in line? Sorry, that's all I got.

Thanks for this info. I just downloaded the app and found my iPhone 4 reservation too which is great news even though I expected it. Interestingly, I went to the local Apple Store on the Apple internet site, signed in as I've done for some workshops, genius bar appointments, etc. and could not find any info about a reserved iPhone. I guess the two systems don't necessarily talk to each other.

Not trying to create any panic here but I just called my Apple store and asked them what happens if the line is so long that I can't get into the store to pick up my reserved phone before they close. All they have to say is repeating the line on the confirmation, "your phone will be held until close of business". They have no answer and they are expecting very long lines. It doesn't seem like they have any crowd control plan either (you think they would have learned from the 3G launch). I hope your store is better prepared than mine. Good luck to all.
