How do I transfer pictures from my iPhone to my PC?

I have a first generation iPhone. I have pics that I would like to transfer to my PC, however, the iPhone does not show up when I open "My Computer". How can I import these photos?

HP Notebook, Windows 7

Photos in your camera roll are imported just like photos from a digital camera. In windows you should have the scanner/camera wizard to do this.

As soon as you connect your iPhone 4 to your computer, a message should appear in the bottom right hand corner of the task bar saying that new hardware has been found. Select the message box. Then go through the installation wizard that opens. Continue to select the boxes that say that you do not have an installation CD or that you want to use the internet to find them. Soon, the wizard will install the iPhone 4 as a Still Camera device. When the wizard exits, go into My Computer and your iPhone 4 will be there, usually displayed as "Apple iPhone". When you click on it you will be able to view all of the photos on your iPhone 4. I still cannot figure out how to transfer video to a Windows-based PC.

The real answer here is that Apple does not respect their Windows customers enough to make a workable solution. Because they do not have this problem on the Apple side, I believe their attitude is "if you don't like the way our products work with Windows - buy a Mac". If you will notice iTunes DOES NOT transfer pictures from the iPhone to the PC. It was originally designed to work with iPods, which did not take pictures and it only syncs pictures TO the device from the PC. No, Apple relies on circa 1998 technology in Windows called the "scanner and camera Wizard". This functionality was built into Windows at a time when the highest resolution digital cameras were around 4 megapixels. It is not capable of moving 1.3gb HD video files from the iPhone 4 to your PC. Unfortunately, I don't think Apple has any incentive to fix this problem, as having it only bolsters their argument that the MAC is somehow "better". I don't buy it, Apple should build the functionality directly into iTunes and not rely on Windows to support their product. And Microsoft doesn't have any incentive to fix the Scanner and Camera Wizard, because no reputable camera or scanner manufacturer uses it anymore. Instead they bundle support software with their products, just as Apple should.

I faced the same probem. In fact, you can use an iphone to computer transfer program to help.I personally use this iPhone to Computer Transfer to transfer my songs/videos/photos/playlists etc from iphone to my computer directly and safely. It works well for me. You can try it.

I was having the same problem that my PC did not detect my iPhone as a camera (wouldn't show up on My Computer nor with the Camera and Scanner Wizard). However, once I read the advice to delete photos which are in the Camera Roll which were not taken on the iPhone (I had ones I had saved from an email, for example), I reconnected the IPhone to the PC and finally the PC detected the iPhone so I could transfer the photos. Weird that it worked but it does!

Don't delete anything!
Right then - firstly make sure that your autoplay is still working properly for the iPhone 4 when you plug into your PC.
Go to Control Panel > Hardware & Sound > Autoplay
At the bottom, make sure your iPhone is set to "Import pictures and videos using Windows". Click Apply/Save in the bottom right.
Now - make sure your iPhone 4 isn't screen locked (enter your PIN if it is).
Now connect your iPhone USB cable to phone and PC.
It should now import your photos to your PC - probably to a folder called Pictures or MyPictures...

Thanks for the tip Gavwad - I actually couldn't find the autoplay in Control Panel but just found that having the screen unlocked before I connected it to my PC actually helped. Bizarre, but it worked! The iPhone was then detected by the PC.

Here's how I solved the problem in Windows 7:

1. Click on the Start button
2. In the 'Search Programs and Files' search box, type "Autoplay"
3. Scroll to the bottom of the Autoplay page
4. You should find a list of Apple Devices at the bottom of the list.
5. Beside the name of your iPhone click the menu to the right and select:

"Import pictures and videos using Windows"

6. Click Save.

From then on in Windows opened the 'Import Pictures and Videos Using Windows' option to let me import my pictures. Easy Peasy

Some how that was shut off on my PC.

I have the original iPhone 3G and Windows Vista. I went to the Windows Help sectionp, and it took me to the Windows Photo Gallery Program. It recognized my iPhone without having to delete any photos, and imported over 150 photos in about 30 seconds. Windows help will take you to the Photo Gallery program. I've copied the instructions here. Follow the instructions from "what if the dialog box doesn't appear" section.

How do I get pictures from my camera to my computer?

Here is the simplest method:

Connect the camera to your computer by using the camera's USB cable.
Turn on the camera.
In the dialog box that appears, click Import using Windows to copy pictures to your computer.

I actually tried every method (aside from installing other external software) that you'll have stated.

I have an iphone 3GS and a windows vista, although I tried with a windows 7 computer and I couldn't upload the photos as well.

We all know very well, in the past you could just connect the iphone to the USB and then to the computer and it will be detected as a device, but now it no longer works. It never gets detected whether I have PIN code or not, whether I deleted any photos or changed autoplay settings. It is simply no longer a device/hard disk and there is no way to get the photos out except to email them one by one. Of course this can't work for me very much now, because it's been a year since I could last manage to upload my photos, and I have accumulated more than 2000 photos. I can only email myself those that I needed, but now my phone memory is reaching a limit and I need to get those photos out!

I solved this simply by installing Apple's iPhone Windows Compatibility Pack on my PC:

Yes, I know it says Windows 7 but it worked on Windows XP SP3 too.

The other really useful tip was to unlock the iphone with password - it won't recognise a locked iPhone.

i Know how to do it: plug you iphone 4 into the computer and follow these instructions, start ---> control panel ---> hardware and sound ---> devices and printers, scroll down to apple iPhone then right click ---> browse files ---> apple iPhone ---> internal storage ---> DCIM ---> whatever folder comes up click it and your pictures and videos will show up
