iPod Classic won't sync after 9.2 update

Just updated iTunes this morning, and now my iPod won't sync. It verifies the iPod and as soon as it starts to sync, iTunes completely freezes, and a few seconds later my iPod no longer says syncing on the screen. I have to force quit iTunes. I've tried doing automatic syncing, manual syncing, restarting my computer, resetting my iPod, nothing seems to work. What should I do?

Did you install 9.2 through Software Update or did you download the installer from apple.com? I had the same issue with my first attempt to upgrade to 9.2 and only got my iPod Classic to sync after I restored iTunes to 9.1.1 and then upgraded to 9.2 with the installer. I also made sure I quit all other apps before I installed it.

I'm not 100 percent sure, but I have a theory that my iTunes Library file was corrupted when I made the first upgrade through Software Update. Restoring it with Time Machine gave me back my uncorrupted iTunes Library file, and when I performed the upgrade it was a noticeably different process. First of all, it took a considerable amount of time to "update my library" and then it also reprocessed thumbnails for all of my album art.

Still, I had the spinning beach ball when I connected my iPod Classic for the first time after the upgrade, and then I had about a 15 minute delay before it would finally sync.

Actually, I don't know how I downloaded it. I opened iTunes and a box popped up telling me of an upgrade.
Every upgrade in the past has had minor changes and none that adversely affected the performance.
Boy has this one been a mess.
Now it worked sometimes instantly and the next time it will take an hour or more if it ever syncs at all.
apple doesn't give a **** about older technology. That is clear.
I have nearly 27,000 songs in my library (I'm a musician) and nothing else has the capacity to carry the entire library except for the 160GB Classic.
Apple, like most big monoliths, cares nothing about consumers who have bought older products though I bought mine less than 6 months ago.
Make one of the pansy iPods with that kind of storage and I'll buy it.
BTW
The iPad is useless and there is nothing that the 3GS or 4 phone will do that I need or care about. Hence Apple doesn't care about me or my future business.

Sounds like you got the update through the Software Update. And trust me when I tell you that this latest update has NOTHING on the mess that was iTunes 7.0.

I know exactly what you mean about needing the iPod Classic for its capacity. I waited and waited for several years until Apple released an iPod with the kind of storage I needed to carry all my music with me. They finally did in September 2007 at the same event that they introduced the iPod Touch. I bought my 160 GB that same week. As much as I REALLY wanted the iPod Touch for its interface and touch screen, I bought the iPod Classic because I needed the capacity more. Prior to that purchase, I was using a 40 GB 3rd gen iPod I bought in November 2002, and I had more music than would fit on the 80 GB iPods that were previously the maximum. The problem wasn't what music did I want to carry with me, but rather what music did I choose to leave behind? The 160 GB solved that problem and I am still working to fill it.

I currently have 30,000-plus songs in my library and I haven't even come close to ripping my entire CD collection yet. (I also have a lot of vinyl that I convert to digital files when a CD for that title does not exist.) I don't even put any photos or video on my iPod Classic because I need the volume for my tunes. I doubt, too, that Apple will ever make an iPod with a hard drive bigger than 160 GB or that they will ever issue an OS updates for our aging devices. Most of the company's focus is now on touch-screen technologies of the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

Yes, it does work, just read through the thread. Download a fresh copy of iTunes (not through software update), open it and let the library work it's way through. After it seems happy and things play and all is well, then connect your iPod Classic, and eventually iTunes will seem like it freezes. Don't panic, let it do it's thing. It took about 20 minutes for me, others reported five minutes, some longer. Give it time, just walk away and all of a sudden it works. And, better yet, after it finally works then syncing is much faster. Also, I notice that when I eject the iPod after syncing, it takes less time for that anoying wait for the message that it's safe to disconnect.

All good! Report if you have a different experience.

Yep - updated to 9.2 this afternoon and it just took me 30 minutes to synch my 80GB iPod classic. Haven't tried doing it again to see if the problem is "solved" now, but, like everyone else, since the update my computer hung on "verifying" the iPod for about ten/fifteen minutes before finally - achingly slowly - it went into a synch/freeze/synch/freeze loop until synching was finally completed.

This is not the first time an Apple iTunes update has wrecked my iPod experience and been riddled with frustrating bugs. I hope all those new iPhone users out there are happy that our ability to use our iPods was sacrificed for their convenience, and wish Apple would get into the good-practice of only releasing updates when they actually work. God knows it would save their customers a lot of time and hassle!

Look for a fix to come out in the next month or so - quietly and without fanfare - with absolutely no apology from Apple. That's what happened the other times official iTunes updates beachballed my iPod.

Help!.....I think this may be the best thread for posting this. I'm trying to sync my 5th gen iPod (ver 1.3) to my iTunes and it's got the same problem that I had trying to sync my wife's Nano a couple months back. First, a little history....

A couple months back, my wife was leaving and wanted to update her iPod. We couldn't get it to sync. Sometimes it would show up in iTunes and start to sync but would then stop and hang up. As time went on with subsequent syncing attempts, it wouldn't even show up in iTunes or on the desktop. We finally got her on the road by restoring and syncing on her laptop, rather than the Mac Pro tower I'm typing this on. Oh, and I spent maybe a couple hours on the phone with tech support to no avail. Even upgraded to the latest 9.1.1 iTunes. We even suspected the Nano and I went out and bought a new one and that didn't work either. Anyway she left for her months trip.

A few days later, I decided I'd do all the software updates that the software update program said I needed to do. I did this, maybe 20 different upgrades. Then, just for the heck of it, I tried syncing her original Nano and presto, it worked perfectly. So, I thought I had it fixed.

Then, today, I tried syncing my own personal 5th gen, 60 gig iPod and it hung up. I'd added maybe 10 albums the previous day and still have roughly 7.5 gig available on the iPod. It will connect, the iPod shows up in both iTunes and on the desktop, and it starts to sync and will get as far as 8 or 12 songs and then hangs just trying to sync that one song. I even got rid of the offending album with the offending song. They trying to sync again, it would go for just a bit and hang on a different song. It's like the connection is timing out or something. No beach ball. But if I let it just be for a half hour or more, it finally comes back with a message that the disk couldn't be read or written to.

I then decided to upgrade to the latest versions of everything the software program said I needed, including iTunes 9.2. No change, same problem. I then downloaded the 9.2 iTunes upgrade direct from Apple and installed it. Same problem, no change. Then I went and saved my latest library to another folder and installed an earlier library. Still won't work. So, I'm frustrated to no end. Since my wife has her old iPod working just fine, I'm going to try syncing her new iPod as soon as I post this. Well see if that works.

So, does anyone know what the heck is going on? My 5th gen would connect and start to sync but hang. And the iTunes 9.1.1, which worked fine with my wife's nano did not work with my 5th gen. And 9.2 upgrade didn't help. Help!!

Well, it connected in that it showed up on both iTunes and the desktop. Then it hung trying to sync the first song and a dialog box showed up saying: "Attempting to copy to the disk "CV's iPod" failed. The required file is in use."

So, it seems this are buggered up again. This is incredibly frustrating. And while an across-the-board software upgrade seemed to cure it a month or so ago, the problem is back as it was before and the software upgrade hasn't helped. ARRGGGHH!!

@valbelvalbel. Sounds like a lot of things going on there. Hard to see what the real issue might be. Have you tried a complete restore of the iPod? I guess so since you even bought a new one. I would say at that point try and take it to a store and see if the Genius guys can make it work. Or, if you don't have a store handy, try and find a friend who has another computer to see if it will work on his/ hers. Change the cord? It isn't the same problem that everyone has here as your issue doesn't seem to be with iTunes 9.2, it started happening with previous versions. It would be really boring, but you could move all of your music out of iTunes music folder to your desktop in a few folder, make a new library, then add one album, then sync. One more album, then sync, etc. Maybe you just have some bad files. Sorry I can't help more than that.
