iPod Classic won't sync after 9.2 update

Just updated iTunes this morning, and now my iPod won't sync. It verifies the iPod and as soon as it starts to sync, iTunes completely freezes, and a few seconds later my iPod no longer says syncing on the screen. I have to force quit iTunes. I've tried doing automatic syncing, manual syncing, restarting my computer, resetting my iPod, nothing seems to work. What should I do?

Thanks for all the ideas and support everyone. I was tearing my hair out after several failed syncs of my iPod classic yesterday. I have now synced it successfully. All I did was plug it in waited for the verifying iPod message. then it froze as usual. I went off and did something else for 20 minutes and when I came back it was syncing happily and all is now good. No tinkering with anything, just the same 9.2 programme I downloaded. Anyway thanks everyone!

I had the same problem with my iPod Classic 6th gen 80g. I got past the beach ball, but my library did not update. there definitely were things to update, as I went on vacation for 2 weeks in which time I watched 15 unwatched episodes of TV, listened to about 40 unplayed songs, and hundreds more in that time, as well as changed some ratings of a few songs, and none of this transferred over. The only thing that updated was an on-the-go playlist my cousin made for me. Any ideas?

When you updated iTunes, before you plugged your iPod in, did you install 9.2 from Apple's website (not from the software update), install it, and watch the library go through all the updates and changes (mine took about 10 minutes, including importing new album art and making a new library)? Then, after that, plug in the iPod, wait for the ball, wait for it to stop? After those two processes it should sync normally.

If not, do that and then see what happens.

Stop all the nonsense about where the iTunes update was downloaded from and faffing about with things like "restore" - it is irrelevant. There is very clearly a bug in the new iTunes that causes this problem for some iPod users and here is how you resolve it: connect your iPod, watch your computer freeze and hang for a very long time as it claims to be "verifying" the iPod, then watch it grind very slowly through a synch after that (this whole process might take up to an hour). If you are patient, and just wait for the whole annoying process to do its thing, then it will synch normally from that point onwards.

I had this frustrating issue myself - I just plugged the iPod in, got on with some other (non-computer) work as the iTunes stuttered through the synch for about 40 minutes, and then after it had finished it has worked fine ever since.

This is absolutely a bug in the iTunes software WHEREVER IT IS DOWNLOADED FROM and don't let anybody tell you anything different.

That is not true. My first upgrade to 9.2 came through the software update and did NOT update the library or any of the other processes that occurred when I made the upgrade for a second time from the installer that I downloaded from the Web site. There was a big difference between the attempts to sync after both installs. The first time, the beachball spun but then froze leaving iTunes completely unresponsive. The second time, the beachball spun and continued to spin throughout the long and delayed sync.

Now, I will say that during my install of iTunes 9.2 via software update, I was running a couple of applications during the process. I distinctly remember it being a very hurried process compared to my second attempt with the downloaded installer. Whether running other applications had anything to do with the corruption of the install vs. the follow-up install when I closed all applications would be subjective on my part. Nevertheless, I believe the install from software updated was a corrupted one. I restored iTunes AND My iTunes Library file back to their 9.1.1 counterparts from Time Machine, and used the installer that I downloaded. There was a difference!

If the processes of your 9.2 update via software update was different from mine, then, yes, waiting out the long sync will likely suffice. But for those whose are having problems even after waiting an hour or more, then I recommend restoring iTunes to the previous version and making the upgrade to 9.2 with the installer.

Still, I must concur that, despite reports of my methods, there is an apparent bug in the upgrade and it seemingly affects iPods with large capacity HDDs as opposed to those with solid-state drives. There does need to be a proper fix for this problem and, at the very least, some recognition from Apple that this problem is occurring. They should not remain quiet and allow the millions of iPod users to discover this frustration on their own.

My IPOD classic will not snyc correctly with itunes v9.2 - it will sync the music/books from itunes store but all of my audible book downloads have disappeared from my ipod. They are on the itune account but simply will not download to my IPOD. Microsoft is also reporting that itunes does not have a microsoft digital signature and so my pc refuses to upgrade v9.2 with CD/DVD devices.I really hate it when Apple does these upgrades without doing full beta testing for all products. I shall investigate if it is worth it to buy an MP3 and give up on the IPOD/itunes combo.

It seems that the ones who are losing data or having ongoing problems have Apple platforms. I wonder if it works differently on Windows, iTunes hasn't played up (well no more than usual, occasional freezing etc) since it synched problematically that first time. I tend to install a lot of music and take it off on my 180 GB (more like 147 GB) iPod. I didn't download anything different just used the iTunes update when it kept reminding me. There are always hitches with new updates but they sometimes are better. I noticed that the put "the convert to acc" option back in the right click menu. The latest thing is that the option to update all my old protected files only shows some of them
Have a great day everyone
