MP3 icon no longer displays artwork in finder

Hi there,

I'm not sure if this started since iTunes 9.2 or 10.6.4, but MP3 icons - in my documents folder, for example - don't display the artwork for the file anymore. I just see the 'musical notes' generic symbol instead. Even when I quicklook the item, it plays back, but again without the specific artwork for that file.

If I open the file in iTunes, the artwork is presented, however. Outside of iTunes in finder windows or folders, there's no artwork. This used to work until very recently, so I don't know what's changed. Can the finder no longer read MP3 artwork outside of iTunes?

No fix with 9.2.1. So I did some troubleshooting. First, all who are responding to this must understand that this is a problem outside of iTunes, ie when a music file is copied from iTunes to desktop (finder). When I view my default iTunes music folder, all the thumbnails and icon previews show up, but I don't know if iTunes is using the Artwork folder info to build the images. As I explained before, iTunes does not embed the artwork into the specific song file using universal ID3 tags, that is why I used a script to do so. Now all my ID3 tag versions are either v2.2 or v2.3. The finder preview was able to recognize the tags before iTunes 9.2. But not after. I know the tags are still there, as I have imported some of the songs into my Fusion Windows 7 and the artwork image shows up perfectly on my Windows desktop. So this would suggest that it is a Finder issue that cannot read ID3 tags anymore. But this issue happened to me AFTER I updated to iTunes 9.2, but BEFORE updating to OS 10.6.4. Everything worked perfect with OS 10.6.3 and iTunes 9.1.x. One more thing, I got one song artwork to show up in the finder get info preview icon, but when I switched the song to open with another program, the get info preview icon was lost again... Once again *** apple??!! I can't believe I'm saying this, but Windows is catching up fast. Things don't "just work" in the famous OS anymore. So many other nagging problems like this since intel. 😟

Has anyone tried a archive and install to test to see if 9.2.1 corrupts the finder. Like I've stated previously, I believe the finder is corrupted by version 9.2. Whether it's 10.6.4 or lower, it appears people run into trouble after they upgrade to 9.2. So I'm thinking once whatever is corrupted in the finder, it'll stay that way until it's been rebuilt. I'm waiting to see if anyone else has any success with this. I can't afford to spend the time to do it unless it works.

I upgraded again to 9.2.1 on my Windows 7 laptop (64-bit). Some of the missing album art appeared in the Finder after the upgrade, but most still had the dreaded Music Note icon. However, on those albums that have multiple tracks, I was able to copy the art from an individual track and paste it into the "Get Album Information" view, including checking the box. When I click OK, iTunes updates the tracks and the cover appears (I guess this is the "Drag and Drop" improvement). This seems to work for albums that were imported via CDs, previously converted MP3 files or downloaded from iTunes.

This method does not work for single tracks, though, (individual songs downloaded or converted as not part of an album). However, on some of the single tracks, if I simply play the track the art work appears. I have no explaination for any of this behavior.

Apple has partially solved my problem, but now I have to work a little more to restore the art work for multi-track albums and only be partially successful for the single track stuff.

The most annoying part of this whole proces is the sketchy information that was provided by Apple on the upgrade and their continued stone cold silence on the problems that upgrade has genereated. I guess they are too focused on "iPhone 4-gate".

I've just done a fresh install of OS X 10.6.4 and iTunes 9.2.1 and I would like to report the original problem remains.

In fact, in some cases, the problem appears worse. I've been having the artwork intermittently appear on MP3 files in the Finder when they are added to the iTunes Library, and other times only a few icon previews on the artwork will appear (despite all the artwork being embedded). This behaviour almost seems "random". I've tried experimenting embedding tags using different id3 versions, and the bug is consistent across them all.

The artwork is usually displayed without problems within iTunes itself, but lately I've found 1 or 2 random files in an album which will not display the artwork. Keep in mind I am dealing with embedded artwork exclusively.

Long story short, I don't think iTunes 9.2.1 addressed the problems in this thread whatsoever. I encourage everyone to visit this site:

https://bugreport.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/RadarWeb.woa/wa/signIn

...and submit a bug report as best they can. Refer to this thread and be as detailed as possible. This is Apple's centralized bug reporting system.

Also, importantly, the bug outlined in this thread is filed under Problem ID 8116422. You should also include this in your report to aid the people on the other end.

Thanks.

It is not a searchable item. Unfortunately you can only see your own reports. I know this "Problem ID" as Apple indicated this to me when I filed my own (duplicate) bug report. Just include in the report somewhere that you are referencing this Problem ID and thread, it will just make it more easier for them.

They are aware of the issue. In my opinion it will be up to us to "help" them prioritize it. I can understand everyone is frustrated, we just need to work together for a fix.

You can't search other people's bugs.

I am having this problem as well and have filed a bug report as best as I could. I filed mine as an OS X Finder issue. If someone posts a template bug report it it will be easier for others to file duplicate reports.

It is quite sporadic for me, sometimes I can get mp3 files to display the artwork in the Finder, sometimes I can't. I usually can get m4a files to display it. The one thing which is 100% repeatable for me is that if I move the files/ copy them out of the iTunes Library folder, they will not display artwork in the icon/Quicklook anymore.

Ks, that was the funniest a** s** ever. I think you have a true GGJstudios troll on your hands. Bicker on! The point that eludes, is that yes this is a small problem, but none the less, the finder should be able to recognize something as simple as universal ID3 tags. My problem is, is that... why the h* do I know what an ID3 tag is??? More time learning things that should just work and more time typing this. It used to just work. Wake up apple!! And the only thing doing this is the s word from someone trying to catch your attention?? come on!! "User friendly" used to get me to turn a lot of people your way... now, I'm holding my tongue to many of your future prospects. once again, 😟

Here is the email I received from apple bug peeps after I submitted:

"After further investigation it has been determined that this is a known issue, which is currently being investigated by engineering. This issue has been filed in our bug database under the original Bug ID# 8116422. The original bug number being used to track this duplicate issue can be found in the State column, in this format: Duplicate/OrigBug#.

Thank you for submitting this bug report. We truly appreciate your assistance in helping us discover and isolate bugs.
