MP3 icon no longer displays artwork in finder

Hi there,

I'm not sure if this started since iTunes 9.2 or 10.6.4, but MP3 icons - in my documents folder, for example - don't display the artwork for the file anymore. I just see the 'musical notes' generic symbol instead. Even when I quicklook the item, it plays back, but again without the specific artwork for that file.

If I open the file in iTunes, the artwork is presented, however. Outside of iTunes in finder windows or folders, there's no artwork. This used to work until very recently, so I don't know what's changed. Can the finder no longer read MP3 artwork outside of iTunes?

it looks like this bug is not going to be fixed until Mac OS X 10.6.5 or the next version of iTunes.

I have notice that if I manually put the cover art into the cover box from the "get info" and then force Doug's AppleScript to embed artwork the problem is solved. You need to restart your mac firstly. I din't try to force-quit finder, that might also work too.

Some mp3s where fixed with only forcing Doug's AppleScript to re-embed artwork and a restart. All mp3s now fixed, but I hope Apple fix that problem in the next itunes update.

I've had the same problem, though just as I had come to terms with having no album art in finder I found that running the osx maintenance app brought the artwork back!

The app can be downloaded from http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16790/maintenance

I personally ran: repair permissions, execute maintenance scripts, logs and diagnostics reports, recent and temporary items, launchServices, dyld's shared cache and display of folders content. Presumably it is the last of these that made the difference.

Not exactly a fix, but it worked for me on my iMac 27" fall 2009 running 10.6.4 and itunes 9.2.1 (4).

Hope this helps anyone...

Thanks but running that maintenance app with the settings suggested did nothing to solve the problem in this thread for any of my computers.

Anybody else try it to success?

i noticed that artwork for music consolidated by itunes shows up in finder and quick look, but not for music stored elsewhere. is this what everyone else is getting or is it just me?

It's the same for me but obviously there's a bug which needs to be fixed, cover art appeared everywhere not just with iTunes. At this point i believe 10.6.5 will fix this but that seems still so far away.

I am also having the same problem running latest version of Mac OS X and iTunes. It also has an impact in Front Row. My music files that do not show artwork in Finder also do not show artwork in Front Row

Did Apple just turned the spotlight on the one feature iTunes 9.2 broke?! Talk about throwing salt on the wounds. Let's just hope tomorrow's new iTunes fixes whatever the current version broke in Finder/LaunchServices.

So, as predicted, iTunes 9.2.1 lifecycle ended without a fix for this nasty bug.

However, one can technically file this one as "solved" since a known workaround now exists: upgrading to iTunes 10 fixes the issue.

iTunes 10 don't fix the problem.. not at all.

Now i can see the artwork in my songs buy still there are a lot without this, i have to put it manually with itunes to solve the problem in those songs.

Looks like iTunes 10 fixes the problem. After install mp3s with known embedded artwork display again in folders. Copy test from iTunes to desktop shows artwork like it used to.

Update fixed it!!!!! All album artwork shows in finder no matter if the drive is internal or external... Thank you Apple, by the way, nice way to spice up the old Itunes layout..... Back to buying new tunes.............

After a few months I'm happy to see this issue is now resolved in iTunes 10. Thanks to everyone who helped to get this fixed.
