thanks Danrock. You rock! Worked perfectly.
This article explains why this might be happening

If you don't really care to know... check if you're using a third party DNS provider like OpenDNS or Googles. If you are change your DNS back to your ISP's DNS and try to restart the download.
This was the issue for me. When I stopped using OpenDNS my iTunes download speeds returned to normal.
Trashing OpenDNS fixed this problem for me too. Many thanks!! 🙂
thanks benjamin!!! i had to laugh at myself, once i tried your solution and it worked... the simplest answer is usually the best, for the past few days i was getting slow download speeds when i went to update an app, apps like bump which are 6.7MB taking 20 plus minutes, well today i decided to come here and read your post and it worked, lol and no not new to the internet just was not thinking, thanks for the pat on the head to wake up lol
same ere iam on 100mb virgin media did sppeed test getting 76mbps download 9.4 mbps up

Hello Scott,
My name is Fritz, from iTunes Store Customer Support and I am happy to help you with this issue.
I understand that you have contacted us because you are unable to download completely the movie you have purchased. Please accept my sincere apologies for the frustration this download has caused. I took the liberty of removing the file causing the issue from your download queue.
Scott, after reviewing the circumstances of your case, we determined that issuing you a refund for your purchase of "Red Tails" is an appropriate exception to the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions, which state that all sales are final. In five to seven business days, a credit of 13.99 GBP should be posted to the credit card that appears on the receipt for that purchase.
Additionally, please note that the average file size of a movie on the iTunes Store is 1 to 1.5 GB. Because of the size, a broadband Internet connection is required.
Thank you for the opportunity to help you. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. I'll be more than happy to assist you with whatever you need.
Sincerely,
Fritz

This is so strange. I even barely get pictures in the iTunes store donloaded, not to speak about actual downloads.
This is happening for the past two weeks. I sincerely hope, they are resolving the account / network issues quickly; rather than refunding customers for its purchases... as I would like to have the content rathen being fristrated about technical aspects!
I have a 50x5 Mbit cable business class modem, from Time Warner, in my house (doing that give me priority bandwidth over other residences).... Also as a business class there's no data caps or port blockings. The most I EVER get from the iTunes Store is 4-5MBytes/sec (about 35 Mbits)... Usually I get 1-2 MBytes/sec to iTunes or any device
My guesses are
1) Apple just doesn't have the bandwidth during certain times
2) I notice they throttle accounts. If I download an entire hd season, I start out fast, then it slows after a few hrs... Im guessing apple has a max data cap per day then slows you down.
3) I also don't think Apple is capable of handling all the new 35-50Mbit connections that are now readily available from the big cable companies.
Im in Charlotte, NC, USA
Try using Time Warner's DNS servers that helped me, I switched from OpenDNS back to TWC's DNS on my Apple TV.
