Can not sync video (movies) from iPhoto to iPad

iPad 64GB 3G
MacPro
iPhoto 8.1
iTunes 9.1.1

I have a small number of videos (movies) managed in iPhoto. They cam off my digital camera and they go into iPhoto. everything has always been happy.

I select a small number of them and add them and some photos into a new album for my iPad. The photos work fine (shot and stored as jpeg and RAW) the videos do not transfer over. There is an error message about the .mov format not supported.

So why does the Apple iTunes not know how to get the Apple iPhoto movies and put them on the Apple iPad so I can see them?

I had to save a video from iPhoto out to file and open with Quicktime and then resave it and let iTunes sync it to GoodReader in order to see it on my iPAD. So why do I need a third party tool and a work around to get all of the Apple tools to work for my iPad when they seamlessly work for my iPod?

MacPro dual-quad 12GB - 3.5TB, Mac OS X (10.5.8), 2@20" and 1@24"

Greetings,

iPad, like iPods and iPhones and Apple TVs, reads certain types of movie files.
The movies you are trying to sync are most likely, not a format that is compatible with iPad.

iTunes includes a built in feature that will convert movie files to the proper format. Take a look at the iTunes help menu: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesMac/9.1/en/31445.html

Drag your desired movies out of iPhoto and drop them into iTunes. You can then follow the above help article to convert them to an iPad version.

You can also read about the specific formats that iPad supports: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP580
__Look under "TV and video"

On an unrelated note, there are new versions of iPhoto and iTunes available. You can download them by going to the Apple Menu and Software Update.

Hope that helps.

I wish i would have been told i couldn't sync movies between iphoto and the ipad before deleting the original movies from the ipad. This is a major oversight by Apple!

Had i known i wouldn't have purchased the ipad.

If this was a microsoft product the news media would be all over this story!

Come on apple fix the problem or is this another iphone antenna issue? (that's right thats not a issue ether)

Spoke with apple for almost 2 hours today about this. They assured me that it should work but the same things are still happening.

I sync camera to ipad and videos work great, sync ipad (or camera directly) to iphoto, only photos transfer back to the ipad.

I was told to either purchase a $14.99 app from the app store to convert each video or upload each of my over 300 clips to itunes and convert to ipad/apple tv with the advanced tab. While not only incredibly time consuming, you lose the date stamp so your video is put at the end of your iphoto library as if the video was taken today.

Pretty lame. Still a much better product by far from the competition but kind of a downer. Hopefully a fix soon.

Under the "include videos" tick box in iTunes there should be another that says something like "convert to iPad/iPhone version" perhaps with a warning that this may take some time? Not having a seamless way to do this is a very large oversight as people commonly take videos with their cameras these days and want to take advantage of the Apple way of doing things (ease of use and allowing the technology to become transparent to the user experience).

I've been trying to find a solution to this problem for a while now. No luck.

I even opened my videos from iPhoto with QuickTime, Shared to iTunes (both AppleTV and iPod format) RE-IMPORTED into iPhoto, dragged the transcoded video to the original event (lost original meta data). Not even the smaller videos would sync to the iPad or iPhone via iTunes>Devices>[device name]>Photos (tab)>Include Video (check box).

I refuse to add the videos in my iPhoto library to iTunes' Movie library, but I have a feeling this is what Apple "Geniuses" would recommend. I don't want them in my Videos app, I want them in my Photos app grouped with the photos from the same event.

HERE'S THE BEST PART ABOUT THIS GOOF:

I CAN'T EVEN SYNC A VIDEO TAKEN FROM THE IPHONE ITSELF!!! I recorded a video last night; I'm here wasting time with this crap AGAIN; I synced my photos/videos from the iPhone to iPhoto; Last night's event appears in the list in iTunes under the photos tab; I check the box for that event to sync... and I get a warning (I reset the warnings prior) that the file was not copied to the iPhone because it can not be played on the iPhone!!!

ABSOLUTELY INFURIATING!!! I understand this is not the end of the world and there are more important things in life to worry about, but dammit I'm just fuming that I've wasted so much time trying to get something so simple to work... especially when Steve Jobs loves to toss around the phrase, "It just works". Shame.

UPDATE: When I wrote my first reply this morning I was using iPhoto 09. I have upgraded to iPhoto 11 and now the transcoded h.264 (iPod & AppleTV presets) AND the iPhone recordings are now syncing to the iPad.

Still no original .mov's from the camera. And still no way to convert without loosing meta data within iPhoto 11. Lame. No other clear 'upgrade' to iPhoto 11 vs 09... other than the decent Facebook integration.

Any programmers want to write a plug-in?
