Can not sync video (movies) from iPhoto to iPad

I was having the same problem of videos in iPhoto/Aperture not syncing to iOS devices. At the time I wrote that, I was using Snow Leopard and iTunes 10, but it still works in Mountain Lion and iTunes 11. Some of the wording is different (in QuickTime, you select "File -> Export To -> iTunes" and in iTunes, the movies show up under "Home Videos"), but it still works.

The end result is that you have a video clip in your iPhoto/Aperture library that will now sync to any iOS device.

There doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this as you may have the video in multiple Albums in iPhoto. My thinking is to:

1. Create a smart album for each album in iphoto, this album has videos that do not sync for that album

2. Add the Album name as a keyword for all videos in the smart album

3. Create another smart album for each album in iphoto with all videos. Repeat 1,2,3 for each Album

4. Export videos from smart album in 1. to a folder

5. Convert videos using HandBrakeBatch (keep original dates)

6. Drag converted videos to iphoto

7. Drag videos from Last Import to smart album 3.

8. There will now be 2 sets of videos in smart album 3. original and converted

9. Drag each converted video to each album based on each Keyword in the original.

10. Option, Command, Delete the original video. Repeat 4 -10 for each Album

11. Create another smart album of videos that do not sync over the entire library (this will now exclude all the above)

12. Export videos from smart album 11. to a folder

13. Convert videos using HandBrakeBatch (keep original dates)

14. Drag converted videos to iphoto

15. Move all videos in smart album 11. to trash (or option, command, delete if that doesn't work)

16. Go through all events and move the orphan converted events to their original event

I had the same problem. I had video clips taken on my iphone, appeared in iphoto, ticked to sync on my ipad but wouldnt go across. All the options here looked a little complicated so be fore trying them I simply.

1 Dragged the video to the desk top

2 Dragged the desktop video to itunes movies

3 Synced with the movie now checked in itunes. Volia it worked!

I know the videos are not in iphoto but in movies, but at least I can see them.

Seems a stupid thing that it cant work straight from iphoto but hey we're just the users.

I have pictures and videos in folders and want to keep them organized in this way.

I sync photos on the ipad air. It works.

I tick the "include videos" box and it does not work.

Also, it's funny: when I do so the available space on the ipad increases!!!

It seems incredible that apple leaves such a huge bug.

Also, mrbofus: I saw your post, but I have many many videos and it seems too complicated to me...

How many videos do you have that won't transfer over? I had to convert a couple hundred videos using Handbrake, which was a pain, but you can just queue it up and leave it running. As for getting the videos that won't transfer via iTunes to your iOS device, you can also just queue them up for conversion in QuickTime Player and let that run. Once that's done, if you don't care about the metadata information, you can skip changing that and just import the video into Aperture.

So, at the most basic level, the steps are:

0) Convert videos using Handbrake if you need to.

1) Open videos in QuickTime, share with iTunes.

2) Find the videos in Finder, import to Aperture.

You can reference my post in this thread or in the other thread I link to if you want more detailed steps. Overall, it ***** that we have to do this (especially since it's been years since this problem has been noted...come on Apple!), but ultimately, it's not the end of the world.

Dave, unfortunately, that is not the only answer. While that may have solved it in your case, as I have posted previously, the solution in my case was that the video needed to be exported to iTunes from QuickTime. I have an iPad (3rd-gen) so any of the last three iPads would be unaffected if your analysis was 100% correct, since they all have Retina displays. With a resolution of 2048x1536, none of the last 3 iPads should have any issues, by your argument, but they do. Not to mention, the iPhone takes higher resolution video than its own display can support, but those sometimes work fine transferring back to the iPhone after being in Aperture.

Oh for the Days when Apple products "Just worked" rather the ripping and fiddling about.

I found a work aroundthat others may find useful

1 Drag videos from iPhoto to the desk top. No idea why you can't go directly from iPhoto but there you go ???

2 import into iTunes. File>add to library

3 they then all appear in the home videos tab

4 when you next sync click the videos you want to transfer and they are on your iPad.

5 delete unwanted vids from desk top

No converting, very quick, no settings, and it doesn't care what resolution.

Why this can't just be done from iPhoto with a tick box is beyond me but that's the new Apple for you.

The only problem with this method is then your video exists in iTunes and in iPhoto/Aperture, taking up twice the hard drive space. Which also means any changes you make to your video in iPhoto/Aperture, you have to remember to manually do that in iTunes. Additionally, it's not a true sync since the video won't show up in the album on the iPad that it does in iPhoto/Aperture.

If you use the method I posted before ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2468574?answerId=22318412022#22318412022 ), your videos can stay in your iPhoto/Aperture library in the albums/events you want it to be in and will sync properly to your iPad/iPhone/iPad touch.

I agree with you about the space but I simply delete from Iphoto. If I need to edit I do that from the desk top version the import to itunes the result. Still think Apple has gone a bit arse about face and as I said before if it syncs with itunes without altering why cant it do it with iphoto?
