Can not sync video (movies) from iPhoto to iPad

iPad 64GB 3G
MacPro
iPhoto 8.1
iTunes 9.1.1

I have a small number of videos (movies) managed in iPhoto. They cam off my digital camera and they go into iPhoto. everything has always been happy.

I select a small number of them and add them and some photos into a new album for my iPad. The photos work fine (shot and stored as jpeg and RAW) the videos do not transfer over. There is an error message about the .mov format not supported.

So why does the Apple iTunes not know how to get the Apple iPhoto movies and put them on the Apple iPad so I can see them?

I had to save a video from iPhoto out to file and open with Quicktime and then resave it and let iTunes sync it to GoodReader in order to see it on my iPAD. So why do I need a third party tool and a work around to get all of the Apple tools to work for my iPad when they seamlessly work for my iPod?

Greetings,

iPad, like iPods and iPhones and Apple TVs, reads certain types of movie files.
The movies you are trying to sync are most likely, not a format that is compatible with iPad.

iTunes includes a built in feature that will convert movie files to the proper format. Take a look at the iTunes help menu: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesMac/9.1/en/31445.html

Drag your desired movies out of iPhoto and drop them into iTunes. You can then follow the above help article to convert them to an iPad version.

You can also read about the specific formats that iPad supports: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP580
__Look under "TV and video"

On an unrelated note, there are new versions of iPhoto and iTunes available. You can download them by going to the Apple Menu and Software Update.

Hope that helps.

@ShaneMac22:

I agree with you. Unfortunately, as I've stated in my posts, even if you use Handbrake, it won't necessarily solve your problems. At least for me, it didn't. I know that iOS devices will only playback certain codecs, so just because they play back on my iMac (with Perian) doesn't mean it will playback on my iPad/iPhone. So I used Handbrake to convert hundreds of home movies to iOS friendly h.264 videos, but 12 of them will still not sync over for some reason.

The link you give is out of date.

I did find a help page that was similar.

When I try to drag video files into iTunes I receive and "unknown error file". The files are fine in iPhoto.

Some files will import and some files won't. It's interesting that some videos from the same camera will import and some won't.

What a farce! All I want to do is put a few home videos on my iPad!

I converted about 200 videos in Handbrake (took forever!) to videos using the H.264 codec. The weird part is that 12 of the videos won't transfer to my iPhone 4S or my iPad (3rd generation). iTunes just says it couldn't transfer them.

I thought it might be the file size, but some of the videos that wouldn't transfer are far smaller than some of the ones that did transfer. (and none of the videos are bigger than 100MB anyways) All the videos play fine in Aperture, QuickTime, VLC, etc...

Then I thought it might be the H.264 profile or level, but I don't think that's the case. As an example, I have one 1920x1080 video that did transfer fine that is 18.2MB and 15 seconds long. It's encoded at 8,978 Kbps, Main profile, at Level 4.0. Plays back fine everywhere, including my iPhone 4S and iPad. I have another file that is 33.1MB and 27 seconds long. It's encoded at 9,541 Kbps, Main profile, at Level 4.0 and will NOT transfer over to my iPhone 4S or iPad. I don't think the the bitrate difference of 563 Kbps would really make a difference since the iPhone 4S should be able to handle much higher.

So I'm stumped as to why I have these 12 videos that won't transfer over. Any new ideas?

Solved!! (at least for my case)

OK, so I had videos that would play in Aperture, QuickTime, iTunes, etc...but would not transfer to my iPad/iPhone. In order to get the videos to transfer, here's what I ended up having to do:

- Open the video in QuickTime Player

- Select "Share -> iTunes..." and then the "Computer" option

- In iTunes, go to the "Movies" section of my library, select the imported clip, right-click on it, select "Show in Finder"

- Move that file to your desktop

- I used the "A Better Finder Attributes 5" program to change the created/modified dates to match the original video clip.

- Import the video into Aperture

- Delete video from desktop

- Sync iPad/iPhone

Using Mountain Lion what you do is double-click on the video in iPhoto (I'm using iPhoto '09 (version 8.1.2). It will launch QuickTime Player. (I have verision 10.2)

Select File -> Export to -> iTunes...

You'll get to select if you want it formatted for an iPhone or an iPad. Click Share button. Next time you open iTunes you'll see your movie in the Movies tab. Sync to your iPad and you're done.
