iPhone 3G 16GB 3.1.2 to 4.0 (8A293) download took 37 Minutes, Backup did not show any progress when started. Stopped the Backup. Waited for positive comments this forum. Started process again at 0800 completed just before 0900 when restoring it showed time to complete 30 then 50 then 'about an hour' then immediately 1 minute then 3 minutes then 2 minutes. So to confirm what others have said I think patience with the upgrade is the order of the day. Now going to spend some time doing the usual does everything work I will report the outcome later today.
I found it easier just to disable the backup. Its awkward to do manually, so you can google that, but I used this program. One click and it disabled the backup. Was much easier for me as I had a backup from not long ago that i could rely on anyway. This way the only thing that took time was resyncing apps and songs.
Wow... I should have waited for your post. I followed the directions from TUAW and "Restored" my iPhone 3G. It upgraded to iOS4 and re-synced my info from a backup I did last night prior to todays failed "update" attempt. The sad thing is that it only took 30 minutes to restore and re-sync vs. my ongoing 5+ hour update method from earlier this morning.
I just turned off my AntiVirus real time protection and the seemed to speed it up a little. My guess is all the small files are being checked and verified etc.
same problem here, been going for over an hour now ... but as one of the earlier posts showed, things are happening in user/library/application support/mobile sync/backup ...
After 3 Hours of Backing up A 8 GB iPhone 3G with 1.2 GB left, iPhone 4.0 is successfully installed. My advice is to just wait it out, it seems like its frozen and then it just jumps to half way and next thing you know, its checking the software & putting your apps & music back
Oh my, what a mess! First of all, I ordered a new iPhone which will be delivered on the 24th. Second, I removed the InCase case and Zagg protective cover on Saturday for no particular reason. Third, I dropped my 3G on my ceramic tile floor on Sunday and cracked the **** out of the screen. And fourth, what kind of geek would I be if I didn't update my iPhone the minute the update was available? So, I am an impatient sort and decided to go ahead with the upgrade today to maybe get my apps sorted into folders in prep for Thursday.
I started my upgrade 3 times, stopping the backup twice, thinking it was hosed. After reading some of the comments here, I decided to wait it out. I started the upgrade for the third time at 1600 and it finally finished at 19:50. Almost 4 hours.
It locked up on the first thing I tried to do, so I hard booted and then it got stuck on the Apple screen, and finally booted back to somewhat normalcy. Now if I can manage to play around with iOS4 between the cracks in the screen, I'm in business.
yes i had this same problem when i was tryin to update my iphone 3g. but all i did was do a full restore and it restored to the ios4 software with no problems since i had backed it up before i even did the update. after it was done with the restore it asked to restore from my last back up so i did and now my phone it on iphone ios4
Same issue, it has been more than 2hrs. It is stuck on the backup I tried every thing. Now the phone is not working at allllll. I will call Rogers; however, I doubt they have any clue
I was having the same issue. On a lark I shutdown a Firefox session I had running - and things took off. Don't know if this will help - but it appears as if certain apps can interfere with the backup.
