Installing 4.0: It has taken 1 hr to backup and not done yet?

I downloaded IOS 4.0, no problem;

But as the first task, it is backing up and it is almost one hour?

Of course, I already backed up before I downloaded.

Anyone have a similar experience?

I am having the same issue. SO what I did was take all my music, pictures, videos, podcast off the phone. I just left my apps since taking off some apps will delete the saved data.
Basically my 16gig 3G went from 5 gigs free space now to 13. It is not speedy fast, but seems to be moving a little faster then it was before with all the stuff on it.
Not really sure if this is making a difference, but can't hurt to try.

I was backing up my 16GB IPhone for about an hour and a half and after reading an earlier post about restoring the IPhone instead, I decided to take this action! It worked in about 30 minutes! Make sure you backup your IPhone information before if you try this way.
So seriously just restore the IPhone it works way faster and comes out with the same outcome!

My first go around i sat waiting for it to backup for 2 1/2 hours. Then i cancelled it and removed most of my apps (a few ones that i wanted to keep in their current state i left on... i went from 1.6gb to 333mb of apps, fyi). After doing that, the backup took about 10 min and now about 30 min later it's rebooting into iOS4. So for those of you other 3G owners, perhaps the long backup time is coming from lots of apps.

If nothing else, removing the apps that can be removed without losing saved data might help speed things up.

I have previously reported my upgrade experience from 3.1.2 to iOS4. Since then I have had an opportunity to do some rudimentary testing. In iTunes selected the iPhone performed a Sync which included a Backup, installation of Google and iBooks started at 0922 and completed at 0925. There was a program which I updated directly on the iPhone using the functionality in the iPhone App Store Application worked no issue. Did some basic testing with Folders, Mail, Facebook, YouTube, Shazam, AirVideo, iPod, iDisk without any issues presenting. When launching Skype a message came up as to which iPhone OS it was compatible with which did not include iOS4 I have yet to check as to whether that was going to create any issues with Skypes functionality. In Mobile Me the location services worked but only after Location services and Find my iPhone were switched OFF and then back ON on the iPhone. I switched WiFi OFF and then back ON without any issues. Sent and SMS made a Phone Call no issues. Powered OFF and back ON again startup time appeared to be about the same. If you had Passcode Lock ON you will need to reactivate this feature after the upgrade. Summary: SO FAR SO GOOD....

Yes it does that some time to do the Back-up But it will finish and load the updated software and then restore your phone with the Apps and Music and Videos need to be loaded back on.
All told i think it took me 2.5 hours to completely finish, Back to working phone with everything loaded back on.
It is a nice update to 4.0 had 8 pages of apps now down to 4. Very nice!

After nearly 7 hours of hanging in the backup mode I gave up.
I stopped the process and used the re-store feature.
This took about 45 minutes and it installed OS 4.0
After this was completed it asked if I wanted to restore from backup.
Clicked ok and it then restored all my Apps.
All text messages where still there.
All I had to do was sync the Calendar, *Address Book* and *Email setting*.
After that all now seems to work under the new OS 4.0.
What a hassle, but anyhow it is installed and working.
