Installing 4.0: It has taken 1 hr to backup and not done yet?

Ok so 1st I'm glad (sort of) to hear that I'm not the only 1 with the issue. now for some interesting info. I had my 3G plugged in for over an hour then stopped it I restarted it still was over an hour with little to no movement. So I stopped again removed all my music I had over 4gbs. Tried it again for 20 mins stopped it. Now comes the interesting part I take my wife's phone basically the same thing as mine just different apps and hers will be done in about 10 mins to put at a total of about 40 mins to do.

Interesting when it finished updating my wife's phone it flashed a screen that said "Iphone activations are unavailable at this time." Yeah just as my wife walked by she started to freak out, but about 10 more mins and 3 restores steps in this process and it's...... Wait a min. So her phone had a scroll bar on it showing that it was processing while it stated on my computer screen that it was restoring the phone it going rather quickly, but it has slowed down the process some. So now it's looking like it going to take 1 hour total to update. The actual back up step thou took about 35 mins.

I'll update later once I retry doing my phone, but it seems that there really isn't a rhyme or a reason to this issue I think I'd agree that patience is what's it's going to take. Thou theredoes seem to be a flaw of some sort going on.

Trust me I had a manual back up everything ready to go. The update took around 45 mins to download. I have tried to install the iOS 4 and I have had nothing but pain. Tried multiple times but with calls it was taking forever.
I have tried 3 times, this time I took all songs and apps out. But I am stuck at back up with 3 bars for the last 3 hours...
Just going to need to be patient but this is getting really scary. I guess everyone has this pain so we will see by tomorrow morning.

the complete installation time for my 3G was ~3 1/2 hours. that includes over 90 minutes to backup the phone, followed by installing the iOS 4, restoring the apps, restoring the music/videos and enough reboots to make a Windows user jealous.

i have no idea what took so long since i had sync'd and backed up my phone prior to the download and install process. the backup bar took over an hour before it moved much beyond the 10% mark.

the final annoyance was the phone ran quite slow until after i had rebooted it. the phone may have been performing some post-install cleanup and had i waited it would have resolved itself. oh well.

it works just fine now. i would council patience and remember the fact that the 3G has the slowest processor and the least amount of RAM that can handle iOS 4. my phone also had 7GB of free space on it when i started the upgrade.

I am up to three hours and not even close.

After 2 hours stuck on back up, I gave up because the phone was extremely hot.

Screw it - I'll just wait until Thursday when my new phone gets here.

It took my iphone 3G 9.5 hours to install iOS4. 8 of those hours were spent just backing up. Patience is a necessity.

spent 5 hours in a backup session for my 3g that never finished. So I tried the manual backup and restore--no joy. Backup was quick, restore was okay, and then it kicked right into Do You Want To Install" 4.0, said yes, and it went into the super slow backup thing all over again. My new phone left Shenzen China, passed thru Lantau Island Hong Kong, made it thru customs at Anchorage, and is now enroute somewhere else.

I bet I could start the 3g update again, and I would still receive my new iphone before this POS upgrade process completes.

yes the camera has zoom, you can make folders with your apps, it will show recentily used apps and your mail has a great spell chec and you can see all of your mail with out having to go to each email

Mine took 9 hours and 45 minutes to run through the entire download and backup and install 4.0. Backup took many, many hours. I started at 11 AM. When we left at 4:30 PM it was still doing the backup. Came home at 7:30 and it was in the process of doing a restore. Then it went through another backup and sync process before finally finishing at 8:45 PM.

Then when I could finally disconnect the iPhone, the first time I launched the iPod app, it took ten-twenty minutes to update the music on the iPhone. The same with opening the photos on the iPhone. The first time it took a long time, but after that it is working fine.

Well I said in my previous post that patience might be necessary. I started the process again about 1am. Woke up about 4 am it was still showing little progress (less than the letter"c" in "backup") a small stuck at the beginning. Got out of bed about 6:30 and it had finished successfully. So it was over 3 hours but less than 5. Downloaded a carrier update as requested and everything was OK.
It will be interesting to find out what is going on.

Yeah, that app worked, the update process (aside from moving all the content back onto the phone, which might take a while depending on size of your data) took ten minutes. Thanks! I got an error at the beginning (cannot find disk), but it didn't seem to make any difference to the end result.

The solution is to restore if you have a 3G and not a 3GS. I just did it after trying to do the regular update 4 or 5 times today, and I'm now the proud owner of iOS, after only 20 minutes or so. Other lists are reporting this solution, I don't know why apple isn't telling people.

After 6 hours the iOS4 "Upgrade" (restore, I now see) finished. At the end of the long process updater messages stopped and iphone went dark. Also, iPhone no longer showed up in itunes on the left side pane -- which was scary. Restarting both the PC (Win 7) and the iPhone 3G corrected that.

Phone now seems to work as expected: now can create folders, Mail has the unified inbox and music is all there, etc. Some Apps now crashing (like RunKeeper) but that was expected (RunKeeper sent e-mail saying this would happen until their update gets issued by the AppStore).

Overall, a very unpleasant experience but seems that phone is back working again.

Ok guys, here's what I did. I synced all my apps, ringtones, pics and contacts. then i told iTunes to remove everything except my contacts off the phone, then i went to the phone and made sure all the apps were gone off of it. (remember you can resync apps back to the phone since you already bought them.) then I launched the update. It started doing the back up. In less then 5 minutes the backup was complete.

I'm doing this on a windows 7 pc with 6gb ram and a core i7 930 cpu. let me know if this helps guys.
