iPhone OS 4 Upgrade failed - now got a bricked phone. Apples fault?

Hi all,

Just tried to update to iPhone OS 4, first download failed with a "Firmware Corrupt" error, so it downloaded again. It seemed to succeed, but then got so far and stopped with an "Unknown Error Occurred (21)", and now my iPhone is stuck in recovery mode.

What on earth am I supposed to do now?

I am not pleased =(

Unplug, then replug it in. iTunes will be aware of iPhones/iPods in recovery mode, and will let you restore them.

This is what I found that worked for others

For both methods, you will need iTunes 9.2. Read for more info!

So, now that we know how I messed things up, let's see how I fixed it..

First, leave your iDevice alone. Then, make sure that you have the 9.2 version of iTunes (to check, press Help-->About iTunes). If you don't have the 9.2 version of iTunes DO NOT UPDATE, but download it from another website -apple.com should work just fine. After the Setup file has been downloaded, set up itunes 9.2 (remmember to run as Administrator). Afterwards, you have to choices:

Download a brand new copy of iOS4
OR, if you have an unmodified version of the firmware on your PC, restore it.

Downloading a new copy
Plug your bricked iDevice into your PC. A message on iTunes should popup saying that an iPod / iPhone has been found in recovery mode (or something like that) and that it must be restored so that iTunes is able to use it properly. Go to your iPod on itunes and click the big fat button which says "Restore". Now, let it download and it will extract into your iDevice and voila, your iDevice has been fixed.

Using a copy of iOS4 previously downloaded to your PC -not via itunes
Plug your bricked iDevice into your PC. A message on iTunes should popup saying that an iPod / iPhone has been found in recovery mode (or something like that) and that it must be restored so that iTunes is able to use it properly. Go to your iPod on itunes and Press the shift key while hitting the button "Restore". Browse for your file, click OK and it will successfully restore your iDevice to iOS4.

Hello,

I have tried to upgrade from 3.1.3 and it fails, reporting error code (-23) I have had no problems with previous upgrades. I thought about restoring to an earlier backup, but that also reports the same error. I have all updates on my Mac, so I am very puzzled as to why this has started. So-called Apple solutions to this code is a waste of time.

I know that Microsoft have money invested in Apple, but did they write this software? Because it behaves much like Microsoft software 😉

Can anyone shed some light on how to resolve this?

Itunes is 100 percent Apple, they designed and built it, jst goes to show you any vendor can turn out a flawed product

Dear all, How do I uninstall this wretched OS 4 from my previously fantastic iPhone 3gs? I have wasted hours and hours. My email was sluggish and then refused to load. The new settings panel is ridiculously and un-Apple-ishly complex, each email account displays twice -- in short, I am miserable. Had to delete all of my email accounts and now, can't even set them up again. I have to wait until Monday for my technology guy to try to figure out my iPhone.

Try updating your BIOS if you are running an Intel P55 chipset (Core i5 processor, eg). I was having problems after upgrading to iTunes 9.2 and attempting to load 4.0 iphone software (I have 3G version of the iPhone), backup failures, syncing issues, etc. Finally found that they'd had some issues with the USB support of P55 motherboards and that you needed to update the BIOS. I updated, and it solved all my backup issues. Was able to restore from the backup iTunes made before i tried to upgraded (that I'd thankfully copied out of the iTunes mobile backup folder so it didn't get overwritten).

Here's a link to a Microsoft forum on the issue:

I had difficulty with upgrade to OS4. I don't typically buy maintenance agreements, but it was worth it when I went to upgrade. The upgrade process on some 3G models locks up the phone in a loop. It will neither complete the upgrade nor restore from backup. It was pretty frustrating. Finally, I gave in to call tech support. I had a tech call me back on 2 seperate occassions. Each time, they called within minutes! I've used a lot of tech support so you have to know how impressive that is. I was able to complete the upgrade with the tech support. However, I have not been able to restore some of the data on the unit. I give Apple an A on the customer service/support under the support plan. That said, the company should test the upgrade extensivley so users don't render their phone useless. In my case, I would have been better off using the older firmware (3.13). I'm not sure if Apple will issue a patch or update to correct the problem, but I lost months of data despite backing up and following the procedures.

I had the same problem as everyone else here but stumbled on a fix by accident. I'm running itunes 9.2 and had reached the same stuck progress bar during the install (my phone was also in DFU mode which is supposedly the better state). After 30 mins or so I decided to launch DiskAid , which uses the iPhone USB plug, to see how much if any of the OS had installed when the progress bar immediately started moving again. Is it something to do with the USB bus hanging (not a techie so only guessing) or iTunes comms with USB/iphone - who knows but this has worked repeatedly since I've been reinstalling several times in an effort to get the APN and MMS tabs to re-appear so it definitely kick starts something.

DiskAid is so much nicer than having SSH installed - for those that access the OS etc. Comes a working trial so worth a try ($9.99 for full version). Google for it.

Incidentally for those who'd be happy just getting the APN settings back (I was unable to use any apps that needed internet access) download the iPhone Configuration Utility App v2.2 and create a custom profile which you can then install and shows as a tab on the main General Prefs page. The app is also in Win format. I also discovered that the Cellular Data switch that replaces the OS3 Cellular Network tab is how OS4 should be. APN settings I assume are already in the carrier bundle files for those service providers officially supplying the iPhone.

There's a tutorial here:

http://www.macworld.com/article/143088/2009/10/carriersettings.html

Meanwhile I'm still trying to find the carrier bundle that T-Mob UK's using as it doesn't seem to be the "Unknown bundle" that it used to use. The call forward popup's driving me nuts.

A quick update on the missing cellular network tab and apn/mms settings on 3G and 3G/s - it seems that the Carrier.plist files are now signed so any attempt to install mods or rewrite this file will result in the changes being ignored and the cellular tab disappearing. The simple way to recover all is to copy an original Carrier.plist file back into the carrier bundle and hard reboot.

The iOS4 ipsw file can be opened using vfdecrypt (google this for instructions) and the .plist extracted from it. If the extracted dmg does not mount then the decrypt code is wrong so trial and error to find the correct one. Iv'e succesfully restored my network apn/mms tab - phew!!!

My phone update has just failed. Scott P. wrote "MAkes me wonder what in your personal setup is causing the issues. I know folks hate to hear that, but facing a lack of complete install failure for everyone across all platforms and devices, it is most likely not a problem with Apple's end of this." Unbelievable! I've spent the best part of a week setting up my new iPhone 4 just the way I want it and now it fails during a software update. You should be able to use and set up your iPhone the way you want it. I was so excited by this device and now I feel like it is a huge burden and a unreliable device. Why can't Apple get it right software updates. You can't believe how angry I am at this time. I agree with M3G4UK when he said "Apple needs to learn from this, and learn FAST." It is absolutely disgraceful that a iPhone owner should have to go through the stress and difficulty in getting the device working again, customise it AGAIN, then fear that this might happen again. I am seriously unimpressed!
