iOS 4.0 update problems

So I started the process of updating my iPhone 3G from 3.1.3 to 4.0. I started by manually backing up my iPhone by right clicking on it in iTunes. After it was finished I let 4.0 download (used the download only option). I then installed it and all was well until the process went to restore my data.

Itunes said the restore was interrupted and gave me three options, I picked "Continue restore". A few moments later a messaged popped up saying error -34 occurred and went on to say my iphone could not be synced because it couldn't find a file.

I have tried restoring it three separate times now and it just won't do it, same exact messages appear. Now itunes thinks this is a different iPhone so it wants to start a new if I go to sync it. Also the phone still has all my stuff on it like contact, texts, photos, notes, etc. The only things missing are things like my music (none on there now), custom ringtones, photos I've uploaded from itunes.

I'm not sure what my next move should be, the phone is at least usable for now.

Well, I gotta tell ya, I am not looking forward to updating my 3G at all after reading all these issues. I realize some folks are having no problems at all but I sure don't want to have to chunk my iphone over this thing. Especially since I can't really benefit from most of the updates anyway. Oh well, time will tell. If they come out with some fixes for these issues maybe I'll go for it then.

I think that the box with: - 'Continue Restore', 'Delete Backup', and 'Cancel' - just comes too urly!
After several loops of errors -34 and Continue Restores, I found out that iTunes doesn't wait long enough for the iPhone to restart. There is still a progress-bar on the phone, but iTunes asks already to retry.

I let my iPhone completely restart and then clicked 'Cancel' in iTunes. The Phone reappeared in iTunes without errors and is now re-syncing my media (crossed fingers).

I restored from the backup iTunes automatically made before installing iOS 4.0.

Okay, I'm sort of sorted... I have a working phone, as far as I can tell.

I had to restore factory settings, and use a back up prior to the one made before the iOS 4 install - in my case this was 25 May or thereabouts.

So I've lost some data (e.g. SMS after the backup date), but I have been able to update most media by a long and painful manual sync process. Issues with not finding media files in my library appear to be resolved.

I have noticed that my Wifi signal at home is weaker than it was yesterday and I'm fearing this will be a repeat of the iPhone OS 3 "upgrade" - which fried my wifi chip and required a factory replacement.

Still, at least my phone is no longer a complete brick - hope this might help some others. Far from ideal but possibly all we have right now? Now I just have to wait for my key app developers to get their new iOS 4 bugs sorted, and the interminable wait for Apple to approve the updates, and I might be fully back on track. Yippee.

I was finally able to fix my restore after all suggestions didn't work (I had apps & photos but didn't have contacts, calendar sms, call history). I used an old restore file from Time Machine but this time I turned off automatic sync in iTunes and I got rid of my sim pin before doing the update (the update was interrupted when it requested I enter the sim pin).

After the sync with iTunes it came up with a warning saying it couldn't complete the sync because there was another sync running. Despite that I appear to have everything back now – call history, contacts and my calendars.

Same problem here with my 3G. I upgraded to the latest iTunes first. Then synced the phone. Then tried the iPhone upgrade. It seemed like it was backing up for over an hour, but the status bar was definitely not moving and iTunes had frozen. Repeated attempts to restore my phone don't work and it seems to be stuck in an endless loop of trying to backup (even when not tethered to the computer). It's useless. I see the black screen with the Apple logo and a status bar. About every 20 minutes, it flashes white and starts over again.

Yay - this worked for me!

I have spent the last 24 hours trying to fix this.

I updated my 3G iPhone to 4.0 and then during the restore, it just "got stuck" and the status bar didn't update past about 15%. I tried numerous things and nothing worked.

I just fixed it and here's what I did:
(Sorry if it's not technical, I'm not overly tech savvy!)

By the way, I'm using Windows, but I think you'd be able to follow this for Mac and modify it if need be.

Ok.
1. Disconnect the iPhone from the USB on your computer. Close iTunes.

2. Go to the place on your computer where the latest iPhone software update you had downloaded is stored. (In my case this was the 4.0 version that I had just downloaded before things went hay-wire).

You can find this file in the following ways:

On Windows:
Documents and Settings\<User>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates

On Mac:
/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates

3. DELETE this file.

4. Open iTunes again.

5. Connect the iPhone. iTunes will then prompt you to download the latest edition software. (4.0). Download this. (Remember that as far as your iTunes is concerned there is no software for the phone as you just deleted it).

6. Then RESTORE the phone as per the prompts. The software will install on the phone and it will be hard reset, but working.

It worked fine for me - I hope it works for others who have the same problem.

Not sure why, but seemed that the original download of the 4.0 software wasn't working and installing on the phone for some reason. Deleting it and re-downloading it and then installing worked fine.

I added a CD into my iTunes library. After I plugged in my phone I SYNC'd in fine. Afterwards Apple prompted my and asked if I wanted to upgrade to the new IOS 4 Operating System and when I clicked yes there was a long pause. My phone is now stuck on the Restore page and Apple keeps throwing the error messgae " Unable to Restore, Unknown error 9 " What the HECK ?
