iOS 4.0 update problems

So I started the process of updating my iPhone 3G from 3.1.3 to 4.0. I started by manually backing up my iPhone by right clicking on it in iTunes. After it was finished I let 4.0 download (used the download only option). I then installed it and all was well until the process went to restore my data.

Itunes said the restore was interrupted and gave me three options, I picked "Continue restore". A few moments later a messaged popped up saying error -34 occurred and went on to say my iphone could not be synced because it couldn't find a file.

I have tried restoring it three separate times now and it just won't do it, same exact messages appear. Now itunes thinks this is a different iPhone so it wants to start a new if I go to sync it. Also the phone still has all my stuff on it like contact, texts, photos, notes, etc. The only things missing are things like my music (none on there now), custom ringtones, photos I've uploaded from itunes.

I'm not sure what my next move should be, the phone is at least usable for now.

My phone was stuck in the sync/restore loop last night. Spent an hour on the phone with Apple to find out that the 4.0 doesnt support the previous versions backup files. Ended up having to restore and set up as a new phone. I was able to put all my apps and music back on but all data that was stored in them was gone.

I have tried 6 times now to update to 4.0, the most downloaded i got was 280 MB then the error message 3253 ,this appears ever time i download. I cannot even get the full download to even get to installing !! Which is maybe a good thing considering some of the probs some are having !
Come on Apple are you listening, whats the story ?

if you delete this please say why so i can modify the post accordingly. quick pm

so mine took forever to update gave up twice and then left it over night updating. morning came and it was done. worked fine. found out tomtom app was crashing so reinstalled it that night. tomtom worked after that. used tomtom today and the phone suddenly when driving stops working and i get a emergency need to restore message on the phone - scrolling acros many languages. the phone stops loading and says i need to restore. when i try to restore it fails with a timeout error 2002. redownloaded software tried again same problem on different comp. cant inniate dfu mode either although i have never tried so it may be me. stuck with a screen with a usb and itunes logo's saying to restore.

never jailbroken phone. never dropped phone, never been near water. 13 months and 3 days old and its knackered. whats the bet apple will shake their hands of me and o2 will tell me to go through apple.

was planning on buying a new iphone yesterday before this happened now i am having second thoughts. we will see how i am treated at apple tomorrow before i decide.

apple your software has it appears bricked me phone. no doubt though i will be told in a nice way it is my fault and i will need to pay to have it repaired. however there is a load voice telling me though had i not updated i would not be here writting this grievence.

I spent 5 hours trying to work through the upgrade on Monday. My phone would turn on and work, until it went into sleep mode, then it would shut off and I would have to do a manual reboot to get it working again.

Since I actually need to use my iphone, I spent another 4 hours restoring/troubleshooting the phone using 4.0 on Tuesday. I tried everything- reinstalling iTunes, re-downloading the upgrade, etc.

Well, I've given up. Today I reverted to 3.1.3. I only need it to last until July when I upgrade to an iPhone 4 (I want the white one). My phone is back in operation, although I lost everything. I can deal with not having folders for a month.

Yeah, I had a same problem. but I erased my all music and went pretty good. But make sure you are back up everything before you erased files as such as music, video and picture. After installed new OS I have noticed many things went wrong with my 3G phone....very very slow...I mean sloooooow. Apple have to come up updates right away. email seems to me acting strange...

Well both my upgrades, an iPhone 3G and an iPod Touch, have gone in just fine, so they can work. However the phone does seem a bit slower, and does not multi-task.

With the iPod Touch I downloaded the OS4 software first - i.e. did not "download and upgrade" as a single action, but only upgraded after all of OS4 was in my local machine. It looks as if the local machine can check that the downloaded OS4 is OK before applying it. You get this option at the start of the process; I've no idea if this way makes any difference. And the iPod Touch does do multi-tasking - wow !

Try Apple's troubleshooting tips. It worked for me, but I'm not sure which one did it.
I took out the USB plug from the front of my computer and plugged it in in the back.
(That was one tip).
I re-dl'ed the update 'cause I didn't get the whole thing the first time. (I think I stopped it
when I thought it was frozen.) The one that was incomplete was in a folder. The complete
one had an icon of a cube instead of a folder.
I was running "Little Snitch" and although I always gave permission to access my computer,
the last one would make itunes quit.
Then I turned off "Little Snitch".
AT any rate, it finally worked for me.
And Apple has really improved at the saving of your apps....when before I had to re-dl them.
