Slow iPhone 3G after iOS 4

Why is my 3G so slow?????????? I updated to 4.0 and my 3G has been having issues ever since. I really cant stand it! the rotation takes like 5 seconds, switching home screens is jumpy, the iPod crashes if you use the purchased link in the iTunes app. Folders open and close slowly, and when I lock it the lock noise plays then it plays like 3 more times. Settings also crashes!!!

is anyone else having these problems? Im really confused. It didn't do this with 3.1. I've also never done anything like jail breaking it....

I've tried restarting but nothing works, any help, Is it time for a 3GS?

UNUSABLY slow after 4.0. Its ridiculous. I want to crush it under my cars wheels! I hear clicking when typing and the letters dont show up for a minute...all applications crash...keys get stuck...minutes go by after clicking a button...blank screens for minutes...I can't have a phone that doesn't work.

If this is apple's way of getting people to upgrade to another phone, forget it! My phone worked just fine under 3.0, THEY f *ked it up with 4.0. THEY need to fix it. Or I'll get a phone that works, like an android.

Hey all,

I have an iPhone 3g 16gb and it was practically a brick after the 4.0 update. Everything worked extremely slow (iPod app hiccuped; I could type a whole paragraph in SMS before a single character would register; crashing of apps for both Apple and third party; lags after being in sleep mode etc.).
I did the restore twice, both times as new phone, and still no improvement.

Then I tried turning off all the Spotlight search criteria settings. This seemed to make an improvement for a day or so until it was back to being super slow again.

I was just about to give up on it completely until I randomly decided to remove all my non-Apple apps from my phone. The way I did this was connecting my phone to iTunes and UNCHECKING the "sync apps" option. This removed all my apps and their data from my phone. Then I re-synced and then reloaded the apps that I took off. Finally, I went into the "notifications" menu on my phone and turned off notifications for each app, only leaving the "badges" on.

As crazy as this will sound, my phone works better than it EVER has. I compared the speed to an iPhone 4 and it's ALMOST as quick (it's expected that the iPhone 4 would be faster anyway).

I have only noticed hiccups when i get a text message while listening to the iPod app. Other than that, I haven't had a single crash and typing messages is smooth.

Hope any of this helps someone.

Cheers!

Is there a way for all unhappy iphone 3G owners to get together for a 3G protest. Maybe if everyone that owns one would quite using them for a period of time than Apple might get the message that we're all ****** off and want to get rid of iOS4. I thought that Apple had one of the best,if not the best customer care policy of any company out there. But,now I'm thinking that they're just another big company that really doen't care for there customers. APPLE,could you please respond to me and all the other loyal customers that you have and tell us if you're working on a solution for this major problem and when we might have an answer. It doesn't matter if its a good answer or not, we would just like to know that you are a where of this and are working on a solution. Thanks

Dude, just downgrade to 3.1.3 and have some peace of mind. I don't mean to sound like an *** here, but nobody is forcing you to have iOS 4. Go back to it and enjoy your beautiful 3G again.

For everybody out there... 4.0.2. is released. If you get it, please share your experience here. As for me, happy again with my 3G running 3.1.3

Peace!

Because Apple REALLY screwed up. My iPhone 3G is also very slow now with the update - and the update to iOS4 lost my data. It *****. Apple is unwilling to take any responsibility - they are one arrogant company. I have owned LOTS of Apple products, and while customer service has been adequate (no better) in the stores, my experience with their customer service online after online purchases was horrible. The new iOS 4 totally hosed over the iPhone 3G owners. I influence a LOT of users in my corporate IT environment (not to mention my family and friends) and I am unhitching myself from Apple with this latest act of indifference to existing customers. Not to mention Steve Jobs' B.S. job on the antenna for the new iPhone. If Apple wants to avoid a mega failure, they will very quickly come with their hat in their hands to their customer base who has made them rich and is now preparing to leave in droves.

I have an iPhone 3G, they are perfect! But im sure Apple will discontinue support for them by next year, even though most of the people with iphones have a 3G! Apple just want us to falk out more money to get another device that is hardly different! The i phone 2G only came out in 2007 and already they have discontinued support for it, look at Blackberry and Android they haven't stopped supporting the phone models an till at least 5 - 6 years! Apple seriously need to think about the amount of unhappy apple customers if they are going to discontinue support for devices as they bring a new one out! I know most of my family have 3G's so if they stop supporting 3G's next year, then we aint gonna get anymore software updates!! Baring in mind us apple customers pay serious amounts of money for these devices!

Apple pulled a serious Vista this time. Issued a software update that doesn't work on the previous generation to get people to upgrade to the IP4. It failed.
As for restore? That only works if you have the backup files.
Mine keeps getting slower too. Battery life is even worse now because I have to run 3G to get Edge speed for downloads.
I'll be Droid-Grading as soon as my contract allows. I'll never get another iPhone even if someone else is paying for it. And I know dozens of people who are doing the same thing. Only people more concerned about what they are seen with than the functionality of it will be buying IP4s.

Well my frustrated amigos, I've done just about everything possible to get my 3G to operate within OS4... it doesn't. I've tried every tip posted on this thread (and I mean EVERY tip posted - short of one) to no avail. I've installed, reinstalled, restored, re-reinstored (that's not even a word, but it fits), turned off, turned on, soft reset, hard reset (whatever that was) and still it acts like it's been given a major sedative... slow, unresponsive, freezes, crashes - even using it's core applications - iPod, texts... this is NUTS.

Soooooo... I was cruising the internet today looking for some more potential fixes, when I saw a blurb from the old movie, "Back to the Future..." and that's what I'm going to do - going backwards. I'm going back to the most radical, new generation, game changing phone ever made... the iPhone 3G with the 3.x OS installed. OS 4 isn't ready for primetime on any 3G phone... and I'm tired of A. Waiting for an update for MY phone, B. Getting frustrated using it...

Those of you that are running smoothly with 0S4 - may the almighty continue to bless you... but please stop posting how great yours is because haven't you noticed, the majority of posts here are not sharing your experience...

I have found that Safari has a SERIOUS memory leek! This is one of Apples own products. It should be fixed buy now! I have an app called Memory Sweep that I now constantly use to free up memory with iOS4. ANY time I use safari I have to free up memory because it is usually down to 1m of free memory. I've even had my phone completely crash while in Safari and I'm only on Google Search. I refuse to get the iPhone 4 because they purposely left out hardware that reads the new broadband antanas AT&T starts installing next year. That way they can sell you their new "Broadband iPhone" because your iPhone 4 is now obsolete after less than a year... save that for another discussion.
