Why is my 3G so slow?????????? I updated to 4.0 and my 3G has been having issues ever since. I really cant stand it! the rotation takes like 5 seconds, switching home screens is jumpy, the iPod crashes if you use the purchased link in the iTunes app. Folders open and close slowly, and when I lock it the lock noise plays then it plays like 3 more times. Settings also crashes!!!
is anyone else having these problems? Im really confused. It didn't do this with 3.1. I've also never done anything like jail breaking it....
I've tried restarting but nothing works, any help, Is it time for a 3GS?
Ok... so they replaced my phone and it seemed to work ok - not AS fast as before but MUCH better - only one problem now which I dont think is OS4 related but with all the other troubles I've been having, I thought I would share this as an update.... The stupid screen keeps freezing on me now!
I updated to OS4.1 with the hopes that this would be corrected - no dice. Back to trying to get support or ANOTHER replacement.... losing points quickly Mr. Jobs...
I have an iPhone 3GS. I was very happy for many months. iTunes installed version 4.1. From that moment the bottom 3rd of my screen is no calibrated... if I click on one icon it selects another, it cannot scroll, etc. An iPhone repair centre said it is version 4.1 that is not compatible. I tried what everyone suggested but even after a factory settings restore...my phone is still on firmware version 4.1...
Any idea how to really revert back to version 3 ?
Very unhappy with this device since upgrade to iOS 4.x, and furious that at the time i purchased it, Apple did not present the risk that the 3G would be in non-support within 6mos.
I loved my iPhone and was an early adopter of the 2G. With my 3G, I do daily maintenance to keep it functioning, though it is slower than with 3.x. Here is what I do:
1) At least once a day I power Off.
2) Spotlight is set to search only Apps & Contacts (of course I'd like to search Mail & Cal but impacts performance too much)
3) I use Free Memory 2.0 app - 4-5x a day: always after I stream video or audio; after any crash; whenever the screen becomes unusable.
4) I have become quite adept at typing and waiting for the text to appear.
I'm about ready to do a Restore. I'm planning to remove all of my apps & music, sync, then restore from last backup.
I was a HUGE proponent but the usability now is atrocious. Bummed that Corporate not interested in this issue.
As many people here, my iPhone 3G was very slow after update to iOS 4.0. I had hoped that the problem would be corrected with iOS 4.1. But it is still the same.
After a few months, i'm fed up with waiting !
If you feel the same, please join my group on Facebook : "How long will iPhone 3G stay slow with iOS 4.x ?". How many people are we ?
Why is this forum void of Apple official responses? This thread has tens of pages of frustrated user comments and its not represented in the 3G FAQ. Its not pinned. Its not addressed by Apple staff.
I bet if I posted a link to some pirated Apple software here it would be gone in an hour or two. Come on you lurking support staff... Stop censoring and support! This is clearly a big issue for many people and damaging your brand.
You are not alone. More than 412.000 people read the topic whose title is "Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4".

iOS 4.2 should arrive in the next days. And i hope it will solve the problems with my 3G device. Or i will have to change my phone. And it won't be an Apple iPhone.
Having a Second Generation iPhone running iOS 4.2.1 is a real pain. I timed my boot up from completely shutting down till the home screen appears and it took 7 1/2 minutes! I would like to know from Apple technical support if this is because the older phones using a different processor need to go through some kind of "rosette stone" application to emulate the new processors used in the fourth generation sets. Also I think if Apple is NOT going to fix this speed issue to let everyone know that they should step back a version of iOS, possibly to iOS 3.x.x but this also might not be possible because of current upgrades to applications. It would just be nice to know one way or another.
Yep that sounds about right. Apple decided to destroy the performance of the 3g with the 4.0 update to make people want to buy the "better faster phone". Now the 3gs is targeted next. if it makes you feel any better when the fifth generation iphone comes out i bet apple makes an update for the 4g that makes is absolutely terrible to use too. This way the sales for the "5g" will be nice and high since all the idiots that continue to support this company religiously wont realize what is being done here.
First they make an update that pretty much renders iphone 3g useless. I had an iphone 3g and it was great. I couldnt be happier. Then i updated to 4.0 ,and it was over.
Second apple made it nearly impossable to downgrade back to any older iOS. ***. If i want to run a older iOS i should be able to.
Third they make iPhone 4... How can nobody see what they did????
step one: make 50% of all smartphones in the market purchased obsolete by wreaking our own phones. that way millions of people will need to replace there ****** 3g phones, and people love us no matter how we rape them.
step two: make it impossable to fix step one.
step three: make new phone so everyone must buy it.
My hat goes off to apple for having such a brilliant marketing scheme. I am sure they made millions from frustrated 3g and 3gs users buying the iphone 4. Me on the other hand am so **** disgusted with apple for doing this i have jumped ship to android (htc desire HD),and will never look back unless apple decides to fix the so convenient problem that happened to iOS4.
I updated my iPhone 3G last night from 3.1.3 to 4.2.1 because the AR apps need iOS 4. So far it's been perfect. It's slightly slower than 3.1.3 but it's much better than my dads HTC back from 2008. I think the trick is to hit restore and set it up as a new iPhone because thats what I did. As for the conspiracy theories surrounding Apple I don't think they are true at all simply because the admitted the problem and fixed it. I think they will be much more cautious with the iPhone 3GS and iOS 5.
