Currently Being ModeratedJun 21, 2010 11:00 PM (in response to Blacksmurf29)this is happening to me too...an endless cycle of not updating and crashing. iPhone doesn't even show up in iTunes...sooooooooooooooooooooooo ******.iMac
Currently Being ModeratedJun 21, 2010 11:32 PM (in response to pkreder)To Solve this issue, you need to first put iPhone into DFU mode:
1. Check this posts on how to put iPhone in DFU mode – http://iphoneindia.gyanin.com/2009/10/07/errorcode-are-you-getting-error-21-or-1 600-while-restoring-iphone/
2. These two posts might be helpful as well, iClarified’s http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034 and http://iphoneindia.gyanin.com/2008/08/12/how-to-fix-dfu-error-1604-1602-1601-or- error-6-1-2-while-upgrading-to-20-201-2x-firmware/
Once you successfully enter DFU mode, iPhone will be back to a blanked OS4 install mode. iTunes will then run through the restore process and start installing apps one by one and rest of the data.
Hopefully this process works with you guys.

Currently Being ModeratedJun 22, 2010 12:21 AM (in response to BrickPhone3G)After the whole DFU mess...
It offered to let me restore to the previous backup. Then started crashing out whilst installing apps, yet again. It looks like Apple can't write stable backup files.
Accepting nuking my backup, I got yet another clean iOS4 install and then slowly started rebuilding it. To add insult to injury, somewhere in the process it had blanked my Windows Contacts so not only did I lose all iPhone contacts, I lost my backups too.
Fortunately, I happened to have just reinstalled windows and the windows.old directory had my old users directory and all of the contacts within it, ready to be reimported. I've lost a bunch of photos but at least I have my contacts still.
Moral of the story: No matter how much iTunes claims it's doing a backup, utterly distrust it, make your own backups of everything. Then take a copy of them and put them somewhere iTunes can't screw them up.iPhone3G, iOS 4, Bricked on iOS4 "up"grade
Currently Being ModeratedJun 22, 2010 12:22 AM (in response to Blogbastic)I too have this problem. I originally got an error message 402653077 followed by error 402653165 and I'm now caught in a cycle of partial sync with the Apple logo and progress bar appearing on the phone and whilst iTunes recognizes the phone it crashes everytime.
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!3g, iOS 4

Currently Being ModeratedJun 22, 2010 7:04 AM (in response to MahaDev)The DFU worked for me and iTunes eventually restored all the apps, music, etc. Unfortunately I'll never get the hours that I wasted on this back...ThinkPad, Windows 7
Currently Being ModeratedJun 22, 2010 9:07 AM (in response to Blacksmurf29)My iPhone is now a paper weight and nobody seems to have any answers on how to make my phone work again. I have gotten two error messages. The first read “An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-402653077).” The second one reads “An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-402653091).” My phone is caught in a loop between sync, crash and then it tries to reboot.
Does anybody have any suggestions? I expect this from Microsoft but I held Apple in better esteem but I must have been wrong. Do you think Apple even cares? I see they haven’t offered any suggestions and you sure can’t get through to tech support.PC, Windows Vista
Currently Being ModeratedJun 22, 2010 9:10 AM (in response to Blacksmurf29)I have tried the DFU several times & it still isn't working for me. Does anybody have any other suggestions?PC, Windows Vista
Currently Being ModeratedJun 22, 2010 10:00 AM (in response to Blacksmurf29)I tried the DFU reset, and I was very excited because it seemed like it was going to work. I restored the phone and it went through all the steps to get back going. Yet when I got to the last step of putting everything back on, guess what happened? THE INFINITE LOOP!! I'm beyond frustrated with the fact that Apple has not said anything towards fixing the problem. I'm paying AT&T right now for a phone plan for a $300 paperweight.3g, iOS 4, Paperweight
Currently Being ModeratedJun 22, 2010 11:39 AM (in response to Blacksmurf29)I'm stuck with error Code -40something during BACKUP. It takes 40-50 minutes since start of the process until displaying an error. I may feel lucky I suppose, because nothing is messed on my iPhone.
Anyway, I cannot do OS4 upgrade.... Is this an Win7PCiTunes issue or kind of hardware fault?iPhone 3G, iPhone OS 3.1.3, Win7
Currently Being ModeratedJun 22, 2010 11:43 AM (in response to Blacksmurf29)Here is what I did with my 3G looping update. Turned it off and back on holding power and home buttons, connected it to a Windows 7 Itunes PC and chose Restore.
Once it didi it's thing all my data was gone but the phone worked and had updated to IOS4.
Then I took it back to my G5 and connected it and restored it from my backup and now all is working again and my data is back on it.
Hope this helps.3G, iOS 4
Currently Being ModeratedJun 22, 2010 12:00 PM (in response to Blacksmurf29)I was able to do the DFU restore but every restore from backup I try crashes the phone again. I called Apple support and all they can tell me is that I can't restore from one of those backups because it's from the 3.1.3 OS, and that's why the phone is crashing. Is that true?
Currently Being ModeratedJun 22, 2010 12:05 PM (in response to Blacksmurf29)I am getting the same error message, has anyone here been able to overcome this. My phone still works properly, just not able to get the new os4, and this is frustrating. What shall we do about this and does apple have a formal advice for this issue?
