Question

Accessing time capsule hard drive

Sorry if this has been posted I've searched and attempted many fixes from the discussion board.

Just bought a time capsule 2tb and set it up w/o difficulty but when I try to access the disk/storage I always get the "connection failed" response then when I click "connect as" I get this response "connection failed...the server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. check the server name or ip address and your network connection and try again."

Please help!

Welcome to the discussions!

Please check your settings as follows:

Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Disks icon
Click the File Sharing tab below the Disks icon
Make sure there is a check mark next to Enable File Sharing
Secure Shared Disks is normally set to With Time Capsule Password
(This is your Time Capsule device password, not the wireless password)
Enter a check mark if you want Keychain Access to remember your password

On your Mac, open System Preferences and open Sharing

Make sure that your computer has a name at the top of the window.

Using AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Time Capsule tab below the row of icons
Make sure that your Time Capsule has a name.

If that doesn't do it, I'm out of ideas. So far, I can't duplicate your issue.

Thanks for the reply...I tried this suggestion previuosly and it did not seem to work.

The box was already checked when time capsule was set up, I even unchecked the box and updated time capsule then rechecked the box and updated again. Still no luck.

I can see the disk on the disk tab with the space available (within airport utility) but the volume/disk just won't automount or mount manually through finder.

Click anywhere on the open desktop so that the Finder menus appear at the top of the screen.
Click Finder, then click Preferences
Click the General tab
Under the heading of "show these items on the desktop", make sure there is a check mark next to "connected servers"

Now open Macintosh HD. Does the Time Capsule icon appear under the SHARED heading on the left of the window. If so, click on the Time Capsule icon and a folder will appear to the right. Double click the folder and the Time Capsule disk icon should appear on your desktop.

Normally, the disk icon will only appear on your desktop during backups, it will auto mount and then auto un-mount at the completion of the backup.

Bob,

Under prefs I made sure the "connected servers" box was checked.

Time capsule does (and has since I set it up) appear in finder under the SHARED heading it's when I try to click (open/connect) on the time capsule that I get the "connection failed" message.

Bob,

Really appreciate the quick responses and helpful suggestions, unfortunately none of these fixed the issue.
I must have set up something incorrectly when I initially set up time capsule (user error). I got fed up and used the **"Restore default settings..."** and started from the beginning and this seemed to solve the issue. I can now connect to the hard drive via finder and access the share/volume!

It seems to be something with 10.6.4.

I have a similar thing with file shared servers at work – it happens that ”Connection failed” comes up when clicking the server in the side bar of a Finder window after it has been connected for some time.
Connected volumes are still mounted though, and can be seen if one goes to ”Computer” in the Finder.

As far as I can tell, no. But, there may be a way to get it to mount at ALL times on the desktop. Post back if you are interested in trying this.
