iOS4 update - now iPhone now reboots during phone call

After about 4 or 5 mins in a phone call my iPhone 3GS reboots itself for no apparent reason. this did not happen before I put the iOS4 update on it. Is the some way I can stop this happening, or revert back to the previous version?

Same here 32G 3GS; update 3.1.3 to iOS 4; Error 29 recovery loop, backup restore not working, now reboots in iOS 4 every three minutes +/- 7 seconds. I notice Apple still recommends the update on its website and iTunes for 3G users without a warning what might happen. Still kicking myself why I got sucked in to update, now all I have is a soft egg timer.

I have the same problem.

My suggestion is to contact one of the bigger Mac or Apple online sites. If they write an article about it, it should draw the attention of Apple. And the more people who knows about it, the more likely is it that Apple will do something about it. Otherwise I'm not sure if Apple will do anything about it or even acknowledge that it's an issue.

i have the same problem with my 3gs, after upgrading to ios4 the phone restarts after 10 minutes on the phone, i tried resetting the phone and restored as i couldnt find a way to restore the apps i had paid for,

tried resetting all network settings this made a diffrence as sometimes i can make a call for 35 mins, then restarts,

could it possible be to do with the resources available due to multitasking keeping programs running in the memory

In my own case I did kill all of the apps except for the phone and still had the problem of the phone rebooting every few minutes.

With regard to restoring the apps, is it not possible to download them again from iTunes? I ask as I will have to do a full new phone install later this week.

Immediately after installing iOS4, my 3GS 16GB reboots every 2 to 5 minutes consistently. I've tried going to the new apps list that is available and quitting every app, including the phone. It makes no difference, the device still reboots every 2 to 5 minutes. At this rate of reboot, it's impossible even to charge the battery. Apple left 3GS users with no downgrade path. This is unacceptable when their OS is incredibly buggy for so many 3GS users. Apple should at the very least temporarily allow a downgrade to 3.1.3 until a revision of iOS4 is made to fix this problem.

OK. So this MIGHT help some people. I just spent an hour at the Mac store and the issue for me (after they ran the diagnosis tool on it) was that there were a million apps running so the phone had no memory left and shut itself down during phone calls. Now, one might expect that restarting would close all the apps.... no. On restart, the phone opens all the apps that caused the issue in the first place and runs them in the background, so unless you're used to checking the multitask menu to see what is running (which didn't exist pre OS4) you don't realise they are there. Will it be annoying to have to close everything manually from that multitask menu when we're not used to doing it? Yes. I have had one phone call of about 8 minutes since then and it didn't shut down, but will keep monitoring it over the next few days.

I just did a restart manually. The applications that were running before the restart don't get re-opened on a manual restart. I'll check whether they do on a reboot during a call next time it happens, but I doubt it. They do still appear in the multitask list, but that doesn't mean that they're running. That list is a little confusing - it shows apps that are still running and also apps that you have run recently, whether they're still running or not.

I figured that would happen. I've been keeping an eye on the multi tasking feature since I upgraded and shut down apps a few times a day cause my iphone seemed to slow down periodically. Didn't make a difference! It till shut down mid call.
I say give us a downgrade option until this is sorted and while they are at it do something about the multitasking. It's more a pain and a help!

Like I said, it won't help much that we complain in this thread. Apple might not even read this thread.

I think the only way to get their attention is to contact a major Mac- or iPhone-site and ask them to write an article about it. Bad press will always get their attention. You could also complain directly to Apple via their support system, but I think it'll take longer before they react.

Just spoke to iPhone support.
They recommended a 'Reset all settings' via the settings app on the phone (Settings -> General -> Reset). If the call still drops they recommend a 'reset and restore' via iTunes. If that doesn't work go in the store and speak to a genius.
As the genius didn't help another user in this discussion, I'm hope one or both of these resets will help.

Ok, Apple has yet to comment but, in my opinion, they seem to be providing something that is clearly not fit for purpose, breaks devices and renders some phones largely useless without any form of warning.

In the UK, the consumer programme Watchdog runs on BBC. I have now raised this with their production team and would suggest that others do the same ... bbc.co.uk/watchdog and follow the got a story link. Alternatively, email them directly via the watchdog at bbc.co.uk email address.
