iOS4 update - now iPhone now reboots during phone call
After about 4 or 5 mins in a phone call my iPhone 3GS reboots itself for no apparent reason. this did not happen before I put the iOS4 update on it. Is the some way I can stop this happening, or revert back to the previous version?
In recent days I have been contacted by a number of 3GS owners who wanted to know how I addressed the issues I was experiencing. With the information I provided, those that have been able to invest a little time have reported back that they have a working iPhone again.

I solved the problem also by replacing the battery. As the phone was 13 months old when the problem started, the warranty period was over anyway, so I replaced it myself. I must say that this is not too difficult, you just have to have the right tool: a small magnetic philips screwdriver, and a lot of patience. Do not attempt to do this without magnetic screwdriver.
There are a number of videos on the Internet that you can follow. It is important to press correctly on the connectors when reassembling the phone. I had to open it 3 times to have it working: first time the screen was not reacting to fingers anymore. Second time the camera was not working. Third time I finally got it working correctly. It cost me 31 euros (25 for the battery, and 6 for the shipping costs).
Although it does not shutdown randomly anymore, it looks like the battery life is a bit shorter than before - strangely enough.
I had the same problem with my 3GS when updating the software from IOS3 to IOS4 last August. The local Apple store replaced the phone without any questions as the phone was under warranty.
The replacement phone was already working on IOS4, but over the last few mopnths i have resisted to download any further software updates as i'm concerned the issue might return.
Does anyone know if this issue ony affects updating from IOS3 to 4, or can also happen when upgrading from IOS4.1 to a newer version?
There may be a couple of reasons why your replacement battery isn't lasting as long as the original. For starters, what's the mAh rating of the new battery..? The original 3GS battery is rated at 1200 mAh. Is the replacement the same..? Secondly, most rechargeable batteries take a good few charges and full depletions before they become 'primed' and you get the most out of them.

Personally, if it was me, unless there is a reason to update your iOS then I would leave your existing version as-is if your iPhone is working fine. In my opinion, there still does not appear to be a definitive root cause or solution. For every person who's updated to iOS 4.x successfully there's someone who's had problems. As with a replacement 3GS from Apple some have had a working phone, some have not. Some have replaced the battery and found a cure, others have tried in vain. Others have modified the iOS and fixed the reboot problem (myself included) yet a few have done the same and problems still exist. It's my belief that there are 2 issues which in a worse case can act together; iOS4's success rate at a 100% successful installation is flawed, and a batch of batteries (which work fine) have a hardware/logic arrangement which does not work with iOS4 correctly.
