iOS4 update - now iPhone now reboots during phone call

After about 4 or 5 mins in a phone call my iPhone 3GS reboots itself for no apparent reason. this did not happen before I put the iOS4 update on it. Is the some way I can stop this happening, or revert back to the previous version?

It's great to see that it worked, and I can imagine how happy you felt to be able to make a call without rebooting (albeit ironic considering it's a phone).

I've since been contacted via email by someone wanting to know the details. Whilst I can't take credit in any way, if people want to contact me directly then my email address is in my profile.

I myself made a 45 minute call the other day -- with 2 bars of 3G signal which would have resulted in a reboot before.

thank goodness these forums save drafts because my phone rebooted 5 times before i was able to post the below message.

I too (stupidly) updated my 3GS to iOS 4.1.2 from 3.1.2 (I think that's what it was). I had gone so long without updating because my laptop broke. As soon as I had a working laptop I backed up my iPhone to it then updated the software. BIG MISTAKE!!!!! I wish I could go back. My phone reboots it seems every 5 minutes. Whether I'm in a call, using twitter, safari, or any app for that matter. It even reboots when it's just sitting there idle. And all throughout the night when it's charging on my ihome I'll hear the charging noise, which let's me know everytime it reboots. Haha. I'm so fed up!! User uploaded file I want to try this fix you guys are talking about. I'll try and email you but alas I am writing this from my phone so it will be a miracle if I can do it. I'm also a tech noob so I'll need all the help and instructions you can give me if that's okay. Iv I'm desperate. Haha.

....because Apple only care about new customers! You don't have an iPhone 4 therefore you are not in Apple's demographic of having enough money to change your phone/tablet etc every year for the latest model with the latest slight tweaks (most of which could have gone into your device but Apple hold them back to get more and more money out of those willing to pay!) - I'm in the same demographic by the way.

So, it seems the only way to correct the issue of a phone that can't be used as a phone is to jailbreak it! As Apple obviously don't read any of these pages, I guess there's no harm in saying that!

I haven't jailbroken yet, but Apple are leaving thousands of disgruntled customers with no other choice!

NB. Always read up on Jailbreaking before doing it - You need to be sure that you are aware of all the implications.

Under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended) all goods supplied by a trader to a consumer must be of a satisfactory quality, fit for their purpose, and as described. If the goods do not meet these requirements, then you may have a short time (usually just a few weeks) in which to reject the goods in question and ask for a refund. After this your rights will be to claim:

1. a repair, which should be carried out in a timeframe that does not cause significant inconvenience, it should be long lasting and free... or

2. a like-for-like replacement (same make, model, age, condition etc. although without any faults of course), or if not possible...

3. a partial refund, taking into account usage.

A consumer has up to 6 years in which to make a claim against a trader for faulty goods, depending on the timeframe that a reasonable person would expect the goods to last and dependant on the quality of the goods, price paid etc.

Speachless. Had happened again today. Does anyone know if I can take it to any apple store regardless of the country I bought it from. Travel a lot to NYC and would be great if they could have a look a it in there?
I should have never upgraded the original software. It did work fine and had better reception until I upgraded to ios4.

I have wasted a chunk of my life reading this thread and others like it in an effort to solve this issue. I have an iPhone 3GS - and there were no issues with it until I (in retrospect very stupidly) 'upgraded' to iOS4. Oh my god. The woe of the phone calls I've lost after five or six minutes. Calls over Christmas that dropped out. Thank you so much Apple for taking so much notice of this issue... NOT.

Finally I feel like I've fixed it by following the earlier suggestion of some of the poisonous green stuff and the overwriting of the mobilewatchdog file. I actually had a call yesterday that went for more than 15 minutes. I couldn't believe it. This has been driving me INSANE for at least six months. I love my iPhone, but am questioning the behaviour of Apple - how do you justify ignoring so many unhappy customers?

Me too. Upgraded 3GS to IOS4 and no I'm lucky to get more than a 5 or 10 minute phone call. Tried the factory restore etc etc but still no improvement.

I am appalled that Apple seem to handling this problem just like Microsoft would: never admit there is a problem until a solution is found.

One explanation (and already mentioned in this thread) is that there is an intentional fault in the newer firmware to "encourage" you to upgrade to a newer model.

Whatever the reason, you can add my name to the list of people who will never buy an Apple product again.

Thanks for nothing Apple.

Neil.
