iOS4 update - now iPhone now reboots during phone call

After about 4 or 5 mins in a phone call my iPhone 3GS reboots itself for no apparent reason. this did not happen before I put the iOS4 update on it. Is the some way I can stop this happening, or revert back to the previous version?

maybe IOS4.3???? Probably not.

My iPhone 3GS is 16 months old and just have been told that Apple doesn't want to help me out at all -> only 1 year warranty User uploaded file At least here in the Netherlands; in the rest of the european union it is at least 2 years because that is at least how long a phone should function properly according to them. Unfortunately, the Netherlands has not implemented this law 😟. A phone should function properly for at least 500 years (not taking the battery into consideration of course) IMHO. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png I've tried to restore to 3.3 (which Apple makes absolutely impossible as well WHY?) but that didn't work. You need a certain file already stored on your computer or something and I don't have that. Also no Apple Store (genius bar) in the Netherlands at the moment so that is also really anus. Called a few Apple retailers if they could downgrade it for me but was told that that they could not do that for me either.

By the way: more than 500.000 views and more than 2200 replies this thread alone (and several other threads on this issue as well): isn't it time for Apple to make an official statement? Can we force them to make an official statement on what their view is on this? If anyone from Apple is reading this: DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS ASAP! WE WANT APPLE TO OFFICIALLY DECLARE THAT THERE IS A BATCH OF IPHONES WHICH DO NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY DUE TO A MANUFACTURING DEFAULT AND PROMISE YOUR CUSTOMERS TO REPLACE THESE PHONES EVEN WHEN OUT OF WARRANTYUser uploaded file

I haven't chipped in for a long time, so thought it was about time I would. Unfortunately I don't have much value to offer, but then again it depends how much you read :o)

Quite simply I'm utterly disgusted at Apple's stance on this reboot problem. Whilst some folk have joy when consulting with Apple, the overall standard of service is appalling. This is based on Apple's blatant refusal to acknowledge the fault, which in turn leaves the Apple stores and engineers adopting their own standard -- which then becomes mixed!

It's also evident to see that Apple are playing the numbers game; given the recovering climate and competition, it's more cost-effective to focus on new custom and ignore existing customers. Unfortunately that's short term -- how many of us here bought an iPhone and within 12-24 months probably wouldn't consider another iDevice again..? I'm one.

For me, I've had my fair share of reboot hassle -- and I've spent many an hour fiddling, testing, not getting anywhere. In the end I sent my 3GS to Apple, who said "no fault found" (and reloaded the iOS for me). Ironically, it was then working fine -- no reboots!

However, during some travel at Christmas I suffered 2 x reboots -- and I'd observed the 3G signal was 1/2 bars. Back in the UK all was fine again, until last weekend. My first reboot at home for months! Again, I noticed the signal was 1/2 bars, and normally it's 3/4/5.

So for me, I enjoyed months of a working 3GS, only for the problem to surface again... but it's very few and far between. And what now..? Well, just before my end of warranty I decided to sort the problem myself. I've posioned my 3GS 'green' and replaced a well-known file that causes the reboot issue. It's too early to really know if the problem is gone forever, but for me, who cares! I know have an iPhone that does so much more!! I now have an iPhone that does everything I want it to -- and more.

And how I love my R2-D2 txt alert...

The ironic thing about that, is Apple is very against it. So much that posts with mention of that, is quickly deleted. Yet people who normally wouldn't do that, are forced to do so, in hopes that their phone starts working as it should again. Now 4.3 is coming out, and still no acknowledgment or fix to the previous issues. Just more glitz and glam that don't do the rest of the iPhone users having issues any good. I'm holding off on this update as well. My iP4, except for the on and off wifi issue, works like a charm under 4.1. I'm sticking with that until I hear very little minor issues, or nothing at all about 4.3.

I posted a hardware resolution back on Feb 6, 2011 1:59 PM in this thread. My problem was solved then and remains so now. I replaced the battery. The replacement was purchased from iFixit and had the same markings as the OEM battery I removed, just a later serial number.

The software solution you are seeing people post appears to work because it modifies the iOS into not detecting the hardware issue on the failed battery. If you modify your iOS, this workaround may get your phone to work, but alters your iOS and may cause future updates to fail. I see this as temporary and would prefer my phone to not be jail-broken and constantly modified.

A new battery was less than $30. It was relatively easy to change, and now my 3GS works as it originally did. Should Apple have put a battery replacement program in place and sought recovery from the original battery supplier? Yes. Did they? No. Their failure to act was disappointing, but my iPhone works again perfectly and I am able to move on from this.

Before I solved the problem, the biggest problem to me was the headache of the unknown. I am posting back that all is still well after the replacement in hopes of shedding the light on the unknown to someone else so that they can fix this and move on to more important things.

Hello!

I'm really happy that your phone works perfectly after battery change.

But i did a battery change (brand new, original Apple battery parts) and my phone still reboots User uploaded file
The battery change not (always) resolve the problem User uploaded file

My phone still reboots after 4-5 min phone call (iOS 4.2, 3GS 32 GB, never jailbreaked) and this problem still exist since iOS 4.x upgrade from 3.1.

Curious, were you also having fast battery drain issues? If so, did replacing your battery fix THAT issue?

Hi,

I got this problem also for more than 6 months. Then it random shut off my iPhone 3GS. (iPhone out of warranty).
Since the update IOS 4.0!

Is there still not a solution?
I try the IOS 4.3 GM, and the problem is STILL there!

And i read also here on this forum that most iPhone can be replace with a new iPhone in the Genius bar. But here in Belgium we got no Apple Store. Only our dealer "Mobistar" that sell iPhones. And i think sure that our dealer want not replace my iPhone for a new (and free). (they will say, buy a new iPhone)

Help me please.

Kind Regards,
Stefan

I've always been a big Apple fan, but this issue has left me feeling very undervalued as an Apple customer.

I have a 3GS 32GB which ran perfectly under iOS3. Did the much anticipated iOS4 update and wham.....phone cuts out a few minutes into any call.

I've been patient for many months hoping that follow on updates would fix the problem.....4.1, 4.2, surely 4.2.1 would fix it, 4.3 (which I hear doesn't fix it either)! What a let down. And then to top off my Apple experience; took the phone to the Genius Bar and was told that it's out of warranty and I have to pay £130 for a refurbished phone (but he never admitted it was a common issue)!

I've therefore implemented the solution noted by Jonty Soper above. A bit of poisoning my phone green with a certain file update and tadaaa, my first 20 minute call in months! I was absolutely elated! Bonzaaaaa!
