iOS4 update - now iPhone now reboots during phone call

After about 4 or 5 mins in a phone call my iPhone 3GS reboots itself for no apparent reason. this did not happen before I put the iOS4 update on it. Is the some way I can stop this happening, or revert back to the previous version?

I visited the Apple store today, had a diagnostic done. Seems something internal is fried. Anyway, it will cost me $229 to have it repaired (essentially a new phone). They did a full restore as new, and the first call I made the speakers and mic fuzzed out. iPhone is now just good for games, can't even use it as an iPod because the audio turns off.

Nikkoh007,
Interesting observation. Trying to use a 3G battery in 3GS will not work. These batteries are different and actually have different Model#.
Further, there are a few battery models available for the 3GS and according to ifixit.com, Model# 616-0435 seems to work the most reliable under iOS4 in a 3GS and even solves a most of the Error 29 issues. It sure seems iOS4 is not fully compatible with all batteries.
Disconnecting and reconnecting the battery would of course be a cheaper solution than exchanging the battery altogether 🙂

Disconnecting and reconnecting the battery has really worked for me on two phones it can't be a coincidence it’s been 10 days now and both phones are working properly, before I would make or receive a call and the phone would reboot after 3-5 minutes and the phone was getting hot it’s not doing it anymore. If you are out of warrantee you’ve got nothing to lose try it.

I am still on 3.1.3 and very reluctant to upgrade 🙂
Out of warranty, live in a country where there is no Apple support and paid full price for a factory unlocked 3GS.
I have been following this thread for a long time and this issue needs some clarity from Apple for sure.
Glad it worked on your phones and should I ever go to iOS4, I will keep your solution in mind 🙂

Oboman,

For many who have sent their iPhones for repair, those iPhone were returned as the repair facility will say that they cannot recreate the reboot. If you read the above posts, you will see that this problem seems to occur most often in poor reception areas. Since they will have either a very good signal or an artificial signal at the repair facility, the phone doesn't reboot and they say that nothing is wrong.

Notwithstanding this, some have received replacements, but I do not remember a post from someone whose iPhone rebooted during an "Apple" inspection and/or repair.

Dear all,

For your information.

I followed this thread since the beginning. I have a 3GS and had the exact same reboot problem with fallout since upgrading to OS4. In the beginning I could help it by switching off 3G and especially by using bluetooth wireless devices. However, after the last upgrades it even started rebooting when wireless.

As many others I handed over the phone to my provider (Telenor, DK), and 1 week later the returned to me and said the had a new 3GS phone for me. I have now used it for 3 weeks and have not experienced any reboots at all. I have had many conversations now without wireless and on 3G and no problems at all.

Like others have indicated it seems to be a HW error in some 3GS phones.

Lauren Hutton

I just read your post and I was all bummed out. Then I get an e-mail from Apple repair.

They received the phone at 9.58am today. By 10:15am they had changed my repair status to Product Replacement Pending. They had it for like 15 minutes.

I am guessing they are simply replacing them now if you point them in this direction, save paying techs to try to reproduce the problem when they know it it pointless to reproduce then try to restore/fix.

I was thinking about telling you all if the replacement works, but I have decided that I am going to sell it on ebay and get a HTC or something.

That's great news. It is good to hear that the tech's just replace the phone instead of trying to replicate the issue AND more importantly, that _this thread_ has helped people get free replacements, even for out of warranty phones.

I don't know how much the HTC deal would cost you but note that the reboot issue is limited to a "batch" of the iPhone 3 GS's, mostly sold outside the USA. I don't suggest that you spend the time to review this thread, but if you did, you would find fewer than a dozen USA people who posted about having this problem.

Good luck whichever way you choose.

Hi Lauren,

Yeah, I live in Australia and I bought 2 iPhones. One had the reboot issue. Then bought an iPhone 4 and it has problems with the proximity sensor, your cheek presses buttons while on the phone.

So no more Apple for me. Out of 3 products, only one worked correctly. Not great odds. I am probably just unlucky, but will avoid any Apple products in the future. I don't really care how much my next smart phone costs, but it will hopefully work. Oh, AND have flash capabilities.

Running the battery down completely is not a solution because you would have to run it down untill you lose all your settings ,time and date and that can't be done because these iphones shut down at about 5% battery power. What i was talking about in the post above is completely resetting the phone and it's bios you'll know when you have done it because the phone resets to factory settings and the time and date is lost, i think the date goes back to 1990. A computer geek would understand the logic behind my thinking, i beleive the problem is in the bios and not the OS, the bios holds information on it's own chip but it also writes information to the memory if it writes an error it holds it in memory and continues making the same mistake. I suppose when we do an upgrade especialy when it changes the base band it wipes all memory and rewrites it again on the first boot and then holds it memory again. So as i said before if you take the battery out and discharge the capacitors or if you don't know how to do that keep the battery out for five minutes and then put it all together again your IPhone will be back to normal i have done this to two phones and have had no problems for 12 days now.
