iOS4 update - now iPhone now reboots during phone call

After about 4 or 5 mins in a phone call my iPhone 3GS reboots itself for no apparent reason. this did not happen before I put the iOS4 update on it. Is the some way I can stop this happening, or revert back to the previous version?

iPhone 3GS, iOS 4

From everything I've read, Apple say they are unaware of the problem (and they've made no press release or official statement saying they are looking into the reboot problem).

I've sent a few of these in, but I think it needs everyone to complete one that is having problems - maybe then they will look into it.

May be a worth also including a link to this topic when completing the feedback.

I had no problems pre-ios4, but my phone reboots during calls also

Now done!
Recommend that all people here do this, maybe them will do something about it?

If Apple don`t do anything about it, that will be anarchy and everyone will use Android insted. Thumbs up for Apple!

I have posted several messages to the apple feedback link and i have tried to post them the crash logs that i have for the reboot during call "feature" that was added by iOS4 and ....._nothing from Apple_.

There are more 480 users who reported this problem on this Apple forum thread, since the end of June, and .... _nothing from Apple_.

Curious that in the last few days there are many Scandanavian users now reporting the issue. Can i assume that the Norwegian/Swedish iOS4 update has only been released recently?

The crash logs, that i have, seem to show that the OS is not getting a timely update on the battery temperature / or that the temperature is reported as being too high, and the phone then reboots as a precautionary measure.

Using the wired headset, with 3G & wifi OFF, and all multi-tasking apps shut down seems to help - sometimes. Another factor seems to be weak cell signal. I have better luck in my office, with 5 bars and a mast at 100 metres, compared to my house, where i have only 2 bars at most.

As above, instead of "Brainstorm" the way you can get Apple to address this issue is give them feedback:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Also, as you might have noticed most of the people with this issue are located outside of the USA? (Make sure to include that information with your Feedback). That could mean that it could be related to when and/or when your iPhone was made. It has been theorized that the reboot is related to the proximity sensor. That would mean that the iPhone doesn't randomly reboot but does it when you move the iPhone away from your ear, even a short distance for a short time (or changing ears or glancing at the display, etc.)

Note, when referring to one of your previous posts, please include a link instead of a page number as I find the pagination to be changing. For example, earlier today, the last post in this thread was on page 67. After Login, that same post is on page 42.

Strange that they not have gived you a feedback, if you have gived them a feedback many times. If someone reports a bug many times, and more to come they should gived you a feedback.

480 user with the same problem, and I know there is many more! Many of my freinds have the same problem but they just have " small calls ".

The reason why so many Scandinavians are reporting this problem now is that a newspaper posted earlier this week a headline with the issue. They linked to this page, and here we are! Here is the link by the way : http://www.vg.no/teknologi/artikkel.php?artid=10026159

It`s in Norwegian tough, but the main picture tells you everything.

My issue is most likely the same as all others, but sometimes i can talk for 20-30 minutes without reboot. This has just happend a few times. Don`t know why or how. I have everything on, wifi, 3G, many apps ++..

I wouldn't bother with Tech. If you've already done all the suggested troubleshooting, and still no go, the issues are beyond Tech's assistance. You need to get your device replaced. At least that's what Apple Care told me. I called 1-800-MY-APPLE for Apple Care. Shouldn't matter where your at to call this number. They'll email you a ticket number, but wouldn't hurt to jot it down as well. You may need it when you see a Genius.

To make an appointment, you can find an Apple Retail Store (not reseller) here http://www.apple.com/retail/storelist/

Good luck mate.

You should all use the feedback link below to inform Apple of all these faulty iPhones

http://www.apple.com/feedback

My 3GS iPhone still cuts out/reboots with the earpiece attached also.

Personally i would not pay Apple or O2 £139 for replacing a faulty product. I know i may end up contacting general Consumer Issues and perhaps the TV programme Watchdog

How far is the nearest Apple Store to you? If it's not that bad, and you are still under warranty, it might make the trip more worth while. Apple has changed it's warranty policy in the Europe. Doesn't matter where you bought your phone, as long as it's under warranty, you can take it to any Apple Store and get a replacement there and then. Provided you made the arrangements before hand. ie. contacted Apple Care, had them indicate in your case # your phone is authorized for a swap, and then book an appointment with GB at the closest Apple Store to you. You can make a reservation here by selecting the closest location to you. http://www.apple.com/retail/storelist/ Or have Apple Care make it for you after they have helped you out. Just make sure you get a confirmation of where they booked you. They booked mine yesterday, told me it was at one place, but booked it at another. I got to the place they told me, and they said they didn't have me. They checked my name in the system, and turns out Apple Care booked me some place else. They were nice enough to slot me in though, since it wasn't my fault.

Hope you get your iPhone issue taken care of sooner than 1 month.

Really? I don't think Apple is having any problems with their fans, considering the MILLIONS of devices sold in the last few months.

But if you really want to express your frustration then contact Apple directly. http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html

Now Apple has replaced my iPhone.
After phone call in july, and after submission of crash report to bugs.apple.com, ( http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11815047#11815047)
I waited for the upgrade as recommended by Apple engineers, with the 4.1 firmware, the problem has become more rare but still exists, immediately after 4.2.1 upgrade, kernel panic returns more
frequent! So I decided to call again, pointing out this thread, my call in July and closed the bug report by engineers as a "known issue", so I have proposed a pay € 29 just to get the new device. I now have a new 3GS 32gb model A1303B without the reboot problem.

Multiple statements like
"I've had my replacement battery in for about 10 days now...no problems whatsoever. I've done every single thing with my phone that I was doing when it randomly shut down before,(Google Maps, Angry Birds, facebook app, etc.), and it has not randomly shut down even once since replacing the battery. I feel pretty confident in saying that the battery was the problem. Good luck to everyone"
make me believe the battery is the root cause for most issues discussed here. Even just disconnecting and reconnecting the battery could help.

Dear frustrated fellow iPhone 3Gs OS4 victims,

I have submitted this issue as a bug report using the feedback form. http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html :

Dear Apple developers,

The Apple iPhone forum describes a major problem caused by the OS4 update. About 514,893 people have read this post and 2115 have expressed their frustrations about this issue.
I understand there are many issues that need to be addressed, but this problem is about the basic functionality of the iPhone 3Gs. Without a solution this iPhone type is been reduced merely to the functionality of an iPod.

Please add your comment to this issue and please place this issue on the top of your fix list.

I advise you all to do the same to speed up the development of a bug fix.

Here is what I submitted in the bug-report feedback section:

Dear Apple,

I purchased my iPhone 3GS in mid-July 2009. It worked perfectly until I updated to iOS 4.1 in early September, 2010. Following the update, it began exhibiting the following problems:
1) phone shuts-down randomly, regardless of application being used or battery percentage remaining.
2) when switched back on, it displays the apple logo as if booting up, and then shuts-off suddenly.
3) when a 2nd attempt is made to switch it back on, it behaves as if the battery if completely drained - shows the red, battery empty symbol.
4) phone is unresponsive until plugged-in to a computer's USB port.
5) when phone finally boots again, it indicates a battery at the same level as when it first shut-down.

At that point, I researched the issue online and found that this problem affects a large number of 3GS users, since the update to iOS 4 / 4.1 / 4.2, as indicated in the following threads:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2544949&start=180&tstart=0

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2471090&tstart=0&messageID=129 38410#12938410

I tried a number of the solutions suggested by other affected users in these threads (restore to previous backup, setup as new phone, etc.). All had no effect. I then booked an appointment with my local Genius bar to have the problem looked at. Despite arriving with printouts from some of the threads above, I was told not to "believe everything I read online" and this was not a known issue, and because my phone was out-of-warranty, my only option was to pay $99 to have the battery replaced (which might not resolve the issue), or $200 for a new phone.

This is a very unsatisfactory response, given the circumstances: problem caused by Apple software update, but user is expected to foot the bill.

I am thoroughly unimpressed with Apple's customer service and consider this a violation of my consumer rights.
