iOS4 update - now iPhone now reboots during phone call

After about 4 or 5 mins in a phone call my iPhone 3GS reboots itself for no apparent reason. this did not happen before I put the iOS4 update on it. Is the some way I can stop this happening, or revert back to the previous version?

BaldiPhoneUser, could you please give details on that. All I read is that this is either not possible or a real pain and when I find instructions on doing it, I also find many people that have not been able to get it to work.

I'm not allowed to. I did before and my reply was removed and I was sent an email telling me that my post "discussed inappropriate activities".

Sorry.

Ok I think I'll get a post removed, too. Hey Apple, regarding your refusal to let people roll back in order to fix the problems u caused on their phones ... You're a bunch of JERKS!!!

Hey baldiphoneuser,

I guess it's good news that your suggestion was removed, it means that Big Brother is watching. The question is are they listening?

Is there any way you could email your instructions instead or publish them elsewhere on the web?

I'm desperate, this isn't my preferred route but if I have no alternative what am I supposed to do? Put up with a phone that doesn't work?

Apple are you listening?

Over the past 24 hours after upgrading my 3gs to ios4 I have had 17 phone conversations of which 8 failed due to the phone rebooting itself.

All apps apart from the phone were closed during the time of the calls.

This is a worrying situation as I work with a vulnerable kids charity and my contact number is one kids can call 24/7 in times of trouble (which is far to often these days). Three of the failed calls were from kids who when I eventually was able to make contact with them again thought I had just hung-up on them, not the best impression for a kid in crisis to perceive when he / she needs immediate assistance.

I just hope Apple gets this sorted out quickly or my iPhone will be consigned to a dusty cupboard.

Do Apple ever reply to threads in these forums? Just wondered if they actually use them or merely provide them for users of Apple iProblems?

Has anyone had an iOS4 iPhone replacement given to them from the Apple Store yet? Do they work? It'll take me an hour and a half to drive to my store, then the faff of waiting round, then an hour and a half back before pratting round to resync and reinstall everything. This process will take me a day - and, if at the end of it, I end up with a refurbished device that still won't support iOS4, I don't particularly want to go ti that trouble.

Luckily, the iphone lasts long enough for me to give out an alternate number - one for a device that actually works as a phone - my old and trusty Nokia N95.

I'm currently having a very interesting call with O2 in the UK. They seem blissfully unaware of this problem and have informed me that my phone is out of warranty. I have said 'that's okay I pay insurance' to which the reply I got was 'but that only covers damage or loss'! Of course I pointed out that my phone has been damaged, by Apple!

Anyway, I am currently on hold whilst O2 speak to Apple... I will let you know the outcome.

I am beginning to feel like a parcel... of here comes a pillar oh and there's the post...

Hi all,

I appear to be having a similar problem since I updated to Os4 on my iPhone 3GS 32 gig. However my problem is when I make a call and I end the call.. My screen locks up in the sense that the touch screen is deactivated. My home button still works.. But I am forced to force a reboot to get it to work again.

I have not tried calling anyone for more than 5 min.. So I could perhaps have that issue as well.

Apple needs to resolve this issue without delay.

I don't know what to do as you are unable to roll back!!

Regards,
Mixes

I am sorry that I cannot share your opinion, but to look for an apple support, spend a lot of time to get a replacement is NOT the way to go. Its maybe a way to go in the US, where you probably have a support round the corner, but don't forget that there is a numerous number of iPhones worldwide, that are in countries without that perfect support from apple. As most of us had a perfectly fine working iPhones before, running software 3.1.3 and now with the official update to iOS4 we all have a piece of hardware in our hands, that probably can do a lot of things very well, but doesn't do the most important job anymore a phone has to do. Many of us are business users, and a reliable phone connection to our clients is important for all of us.
I agree to Apples politics to proof every app for functionality and content, before they let it into the app store, that's fine for me, as long as I can trust apple that all of these apps will work fine with my phone, i don't need to think about releases and version numbers, i just could trust apple that all of the software they provided in the app store worked well and the iPhone always kept its functionality. I did not jailbreak my device as it is important for me to have a reliable phone. Now apple broke this rule, providing a software version that is not working. So what can be the reason now, to still trust in apple products? the good reliability? sorry but not for me anymore. with this software release apple did a big mistake. sure, can happen, but now its their turn to provide a fast and fair solution to those users who are affected by this bug. at least it should be made possible immediately to downgrade the iPhone legally to 3.1.3. as long as there is no bug fix for the iOS4. That's for me the only way to go...

I am as furious as everyone else, but if it is easier to get a new handset with 3.1.3 on it that has to be better than waiting for a downgrade option that may never come? I am not arguing for Apple here at all - this ios4 fiasco is a disgrace, but if they are genuinely willing to do a straight swap the next working day then I would take it.

This thing could roll and roll and the quickest/easiest solution is the best. I spent hours and hours on the forums trying to get to the root of this problem and then 5 minutes with an Apple support person guaranteed me a new handset. Job done.

However, like I said - I agree with you that this is unacceptable. I just needed a quick fix to get back to 'normal' asap.

Good luck.

Thought my problem had gone away, but no such luck. Just spoke to support and now off to the genius bar after work on Wednesday to get the phone swapped. Will definitely NOT be upgrading the new one to iOS4 until I can see this is no longer an issue. A pain, as I really like the folders but it is a phone after all and not much use if it can't make or receive calls. Will just have to play with my iPad for amusement.

My iPhone reboots itself every 4-5 mins without fail since "upgrading" to IOS 4. From what I have seen, there is no fix. I got my phone as part of my Vodafone contract. Any ideas if I'm eligable to get a replacement handset through apple, or do I need to contact Vodafone? I've had it 5 months.

I am also with Vodafone in the UK and have had the same problem so a few hours ago rang the Apple support desk and as my phone (3gs) is only 2 months old and therefore still under the 90 day free support warranty was talked through doing a full factory restore then syching from this morning's backup.

At present it has not rebooted since that restore 3 hours ago so it 'may' have cured the problem. Although the wildly fluctuating signal strength from 5 bars down to no signal and back up again in a matter of minutes without moving position still persists.

I don't think that Apple will replace the phone , at least not here in the UK, unless they have tried everything else first.
