3G iOS4 resulting in sluggish performance and horribly slow calendar

I "upgraded" my iPhone 3G using the restore method which in itself was trouble free.

However, the whole UI is now sluggish and even worse, the Calendar app is PAINFULLY stilted. My MobileMe calendars are visible, but the screen freezes, after a pause (5-10 seconds); the calendars disappear! Then after another pause (10 seconds or so), they reappear!

Generally, the whole phone feels laggy with button presses seemingly not responding and then the OS playing catchup.

Anyone else had Calendar slow-down/pauses happen?

What's worse, the calendar colors, which you can't change **anywhere** have changed! So, two calendars which used to have different colors are now the same. Why the h * can't they provide a setting somewhere (even in iTunes would be OK) - this is so primitive.

@David,
On my 3G, my three calendars retained the different colors they had prior to iOS4.

You may be able to change the colors as follows:
• launch iCal.
• view the list of calendars in the pane on the left.
• CTRL-click on one whose color you'd like to change, and select Get Info.
• in the Info pane that opens, you can change the name of the calendar. You can also change its color, using the drop-down menu to the right of the name field.

I don't know if these color choices sync over to the iPhone, but in my case, the colors displayed on iCal correspond to the colors used by the Calendar app.

I agree with your comment on slugishness. Not so much with the Calendar, but across the board. My 3G now feels as if it's full of molasses. And I have 15 months to go on my THREE YEAR iPhone contract.

Good luck recoloring your calendar,
David

Why would V4 be released with out an option to revert back to the previous version.

Answer: perhaps to encourage purchases of new iPhone 4 handsets. The sooner Apple can dispense with the installed base of older iPhones, the quicker they can deploy all of their efforts on iOS-focused activities (which feed both the iPhone 4 and iPad user communities). Bug fixing old code is such a pain - developers would much rather work on cool new stuff.

I don't use iCal and there is no option in iTunes.

With OS3 I could run seven parallel calendars imported from Outlook. Now it is only just about acceptable with 2! The Calendar app takes seconds to load up EVERY TIME!

In general all apps are MUCH SLOWER TO LOAD! It looks like the way memory is allocated is cocked up for us poor mortals that don't have the money or interest to keep buying new Apple gear!

Not a happy bunny - Apple: you used to worry about your users (a bit)

I am having the biggest issues as well. My programs are slow, my calendar info does not all show and when it first updated the software it deleted all my programs and information. The backup did not reload them. My calendar not syncing is one of the biggest issues because we use this for work. I even click the button to replace the info on the phone and it does not work. If there is not a fix for this quick, i will be forced to buy something different because it controls my paycheck.
is there a way to put the old software back on?

In case it helps... I too had TERRIBLE results with iOS4. I tried to downgrade, but after removing iOS4 and loading 3.1.3, I got a message saying I couldn't restore due to old software on the phone.

I then had to manually upgrade back to iOS 4, and completely restore my iPhone.

It now rocks! The sluggishness is completely gone and it feels like 3.x. Basically, I wiped the phone and reinstalled 4. Much better results.

I'm having the exact same issues. It's also difficult for me to switch between apps on my phone, and send text messages. It's pretty slow and laggy.

I spoke with someone from the Apple support, and they walked me through a few resets until I had to just Restore the **** thing. Unfortunately there's no way to go back to the OS 3, so I decided to go to the Apple store and see if they could do anything for me. They were able to give me a replacement 3G, which has the old software on it. I'm NOT putting the OS4 on this one until there is some kind of resolution, or until I can get the iPhone 4.

As long as your warranty isn't up, I'm sure Apple will have no problem giving you a replacement. However, the Genius there said that some apps may not work anymore unless you have the OS 4... So I agree with another poster who said that Apple did this on purpose to encourage sales of the iPhone 4.

I also went to the AT&T store, and they said I could get a 3GS, but there would be no returns or exchanges on the phone because those models are becoming obsolete! So it looks like everyone is eventually going to have to get the iPhone 4. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing - unless you can't afford it. It's a shame, really.

Well, I reverted to 3.1.2. Couldn't stand my beloved iPhone being reduced to a heap of s**t. I am seriously unimpressed by Apple here. Us early adopters with our old 3Gs just waiting for 4s are their future. I think. Or is it now 'mobiles for the rest of them' (not us)?

Anyhow, I did it by using the lifehacker instructions at:
http://lifehacker.com/5572003/how-to-downgrade-your-iphone-3g%5Bs%5D-from-ios-4- to-ios-313

But supplemented by the instructions under 1) at:
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/downgrade-iphone-3g-3gs-from-ios-4-to-3-1-2/

The Lifehacker instructions dont work by themselves because the 3.1.2 update is no longer approved by Apple, and when iTunes checks, the server says no. But if you use the hosts instructions at addictive tips, it worls OK.

Good luck, and just do it. It is the difference between usable and not usable, even if its all a bit painful...
